COMMENTS..

DISTRICT 1..

Seneca County-EC Scott Rosenburger KE8JC
Our group hosted a General License examination and had 2 receive their General tickets.

Huron County-EC Clay Benner KB8DNA
3 Skywarn events for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. No significant damage. Field day will be at the Huron Co EMA, Run 2F as KC8WIT.

Sandusky County-EC David Gierhart W8DAG
We used our new ARES communications trailer at the Crown Battery 5K run/walk on May 18th. The outside has very nice graphics of who we are but the inside was bare except for 4 chairs and a foldup table with one radio due to lack of funding. Crown Battery wanted to thank us for providing race communications and a week later donated $1,000 to furnish the inside of the trailer. WOW were we surprised. Crown Battery is a longtime family owned business in Fremont that is very generous to the community. We also helped out at the Ottawa County Walleye 5K run/walk on May 25th.

Hancock County-EC Darl Deeds NA8W
Good turnout for the annual Walk for Babies. Digital net is continuing to attract new check-ins each week

Erie County-EC Bob Heim K8HLH
3 Sky warn events Memorial day parade Many nets

Wood County -EC Bob Schumann W8NYY

We assembled a crew and installed the emergency back-up VHF/UHF antenna at the Perrysburg City Police Department. It was a successful install including approx 225 ft of coax fished from the roof to the basement. Fine job by all involved. The monthly ARES meeting was cancelled as it fell on the Saturday of the Dayton Hamfest. We had 3 Skywarn events during the month

Ottawa County-EC James Garber KB8TTR

May was a busy month for OCARES! We have switched to the 443.850/R pl 186.2 machine for all ARES and Skywarn activities. It is a commercially built repeater with a great footprint. We link it to Sandusky County's 145.490/R for severe weather nets. James Garber KB8TTR, EC met with the county EMA director and assistant. We reaffirmed our commitment to the EMA and to public service. The EMA showed great interest and support in our program.

I also met with the county Sheriff and the Sergeant in charge of communications at the Sheriff's office. Ottawa County SO is programming a radio in order to listen to our Skywarn Net when active with severe weather. This will improve ground-truth reporting to the SO as well as showing them the valuable service we provide. Many local Fire/ police/ EMS agencies continue to monitor our Skywarn channel as well when we are active with severe weather. Our repeater is rather unique in that during normal operation the encode and decode pl is 186.2. When we link it to Sandusky County the encode pl remains 186.2 however the decode pl changes to 179.9. Public safety radios only have the 179,9 Hz tone programmed in so they don't hear our normal operations. Their radios only "come alive" when the Skywarn net is up.

We reaffirmed them mutual aid agreement with Sandusky County Skywarn for linking the repeaters and for providing net control support to Ottawa County. We are working on building an active Skywarn group in Ottawa County and are exploring opportunities to maintain the mutual aid agreement or becoming independent. We had two Skywarn nets on May 9 for a thunderstorm warning and May 21 for a thunderstorm warning that caused flooding in the Port Clinton area.

Sandusky/ Ottawa County Skywarn noted rotation on radar and visually in the NE corner of Sandusky County by a trained spotter that was reported to NWS- CLE. Brandon Cerbus WX8BMC was named Skywarn Coordinator for Ottawa County Scott Renz WB8JLT was named Assistant EC We started a beautiful website www.aresoc.org with the help of John Cerbus W8CER. Stop by and check it out. There is a lot of information on it!

We added 12 ARES members for Ottawa County. And held 3 ARES nets on the repeater. On May 25 we assisted in the Port Clinton Walleye Fest 5k Run/ Walk. Sandusky County sent several members to assist. We ran a simplex net with a cross band repeater in the middle of the course to provide crystal clear comms. The Port Clinton Fire Chief and Police Chief were thankful we were there. We had direct comms with the Fire Chief on their radio system. We are working on forming a relationship with North Coast CERT to help provide comms for them.

We started using the Zello app available for iOS, android, and desktop. We have Sandusky/Ottawa County Skywarn channels and a separate OCARES channel for coordination and tactical use. All channels are password protected. This helps in communication when ARES members are at work or outside of repeater range. Zello works anywhere there is a data connection on a network or WiFi. We have found it very convenient. I spoke with the administration at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.

They are in the process of upgrading internal communications by using a UHF repeater and their external communications via a UHF repeater for EMS reports and medical direction. I proposed the idea of installing an amateur radio antenna and work area in case of a disaster and communications are needed. This idea was very well received and was approved. Stay tuned for information! As OCARES continues to grow, we are trying to stir interest in amateur radio. We are a small group but in the first month of operation we have seen great success. We hope this only increases as time goes by. As we all know, amateur radio is an incredibly valuable asset, and I propose it is more valuable and necessary now than ever!

DISTRICT 2..
Van Wert passed 1 piece of Traffic PS; I am having Cable issues with my e-mail provider, hope to have it resolved next week. Sorry for the delay Terry

DISTRICT 3..

This report reflects 6 of 8 counties with Preble and Champaign not submitting a report.

DISTRICT 4..

It was a busy month in District 4 (this is generally the case in May). Emergency Operations hours were in support of National Weather Service office at Wilmington. Public Service events are the Hamilton Memorial Day Parade, and the 5K/10K/13.1/26.2 events associated with Flying Pig Marathon weekend in Cincinnati. June has gotten off to a fast start in the "administrative" department, more on that next month. ECs are worth lots of points in the ARRL Centennial QSO Party. Get on the air! I am!

DISTRICT 5..
Stark Co: ARES completed 4 public service training nets for the month of May that totaled 152 check-ins. There were no public service events held during the month. Addition to my April report, the Alliance ARC provided support communications for Alliance Community Hospital during a drill conducted on April 24th. The drill simulated storm damage that resulted in a power outage to the hospital. A net was established on the club's 145.37 repeater. Several operators responded to the hospital with others stood by on frequency. In all 9 volunteers provided 30 hours of community service during the drill.

DISTRICT 6..
Crawford: Report filed – no comment

Knox: Report not filed

Marion: Report filed – no comment

Medina: SKYWARN event ended club meeting with severe rain up to five plus inches. I drove in the rain to get home. Medina ½ Marathon. Rene, KD8SSW planned our operation. Fred, K8FH loaned his Emcomm trailer and received an event ribbon for being sweep on bike and foot race. 19 operators covered the coarse. Only one medical incident and was at the finish line. Well done team. It takes more than an EC or AEC to get things done. Thank You to those who helped with these operations.

Richland: Richland County ARES had four weekly nets. SKYWARN had two nets.

Wayne: Report not filed

Wyandot: The Wyandot County Hams met at the Wyandot Memorial Hospital for their monthly meeting. The club discussed Field Day and upcoming bike tours. Field Day will be at Wharton Community Park again this year. "73"

DISTRICT 7..

DELAWARE activated the EOC station as severe thunderstorms went through the area. Our activity calendar is ramping up, with activities beginning mid May. MESH-er's are continuing their development in the area of telephone VOIP communications and in researching any changes with the new Ubiquiti equipment. Remote camera control with two-way sound and PA capability is in final testing.

We finalized a new Operations Manual detailing expectation of members, callout procedures and event handling. It's nice to see a closer relationship developing in our Central Ohio area between counties and districts. Great to share information with such talented folks. LICKING Weather certainly was unusual for April, but caused no problems for Licking County ARES. We continue to work with CERT in seeking funds for radio equipment for the trailer. This also is a part of our work with the Licking County Healthcare Disaster Planning Coalition. Some progress also is being made at the Licking County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for installation of a better set of antennas for ARES communication with areas outside our county. These could be of critical value during activations of the county EOC in that location.

We currently are updating our ARES roster with the expectations of improving the contacts, as well as verifying activities. The next big event on our calendar is the Tour de Cure on June 7, which will involve Delaware, Knox, and Licking Counties. MADISON As usual everything in Madison County has been quiet. I did the monthly radio test. Our group did lose a member who passed away.

PICKAWAY Over half of the PCoARES members attended the annual Weather Spotter Training put on by the NWS and hosted by the Pickaway County EMA on April 1st. We have also been involved in planning meetings with the group putting on amateur radio demonstrations for the Boy Scout Camporee "Thunder Base 2014" in Ross County coming up in May where there will be over 6,000 scouts in attendance. UNION Building and testing a receive site to mount on the water tower in Marysville to improve the repeater's performance to the northern edge of the county. I was traveling out of town for most of the month on business, so progress on new membership is slow.

DISTRICT 8..

Counties reporting: Athens, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Scioto EC Comments: Athens: Athens club held a club build of MFJ-8100 regenerative receiver kits without background on circuit operational theory.

Lawrence: We had 28 hams that helped with the 146th. Ironton Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade on May26 Scioto: This month Scioto County ARES members were on the repeater on standby under SKYWARN. ARES Members also took part in helping with traffic at the Ironton Memorial Day Parade. Gary Stephenson (WW8O) represented ARES for 8 hrs. helping out with TOSRV bike ride that rode through Scioto County.

We appreciate all the members helping with these events and making ARES successful. DEC comments: DEC will be coordinating amateur communications for Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure from June 13 to 21 in northeast Ohio. ASEC Gary Stephenson, WW8O will be district contact during my absence.

DISTRICT 10..
Public service season is upon us. Volunteering for your local marathon or triathlon is excellent practice for field operations and Disaster communications. And June brings my favorite holiday…"Field Day".

Make sure to go out and participate in Field Day. Sure it’s a social event, and a contest, and a club picnic. But if you’re a class A entry, it’s also a dress rehearsal for "the day after". As in the day after a disaster strikes when your skills may be called upon. But more than that, it’s camping out and playing radio all night, which are two of my favorite things.

Ashtabula County: May was a blast for the group. Our pockets ended up lighter, our car trunks- and consequently our shacks ended up a little more full after Dayton. Have had a busy time finalizing plans for Field Day. A bunch of fun things to add some variety this year and possibly streamline our operation. Looking forward another great month in D10.

Cuyahoga County: Due to busy Schedule, no monthly meeting was held this month. Activities included participation with the Rite-Aid Cleveland Marathon. ARES was activated to participate with the EOC for this event. Meetings with EOC planning occurring last month. Mutual assistance was provided to the Medina EOC for their 1/2 marathon. General instructional pre-event meetings were held earlier in the week for each event. Other public service events included: Weight Watchers 5K walk/run Blossom Run Beck for Beck Bike ride.

Geauga County: Public Service events are starting to pick up. Members help out a lot of different groups.

Lake County: Two Amateurs were asked to demonstrate Telegraph and CW at the Lake County History Center. The 7th and 8th grade students where impressed. It generated a lot of interest in amateur radio. Many thanks to WT8C Reno and AA8OY Jim for their time and effort. The following day N8IJG Bill, KB8BKE ED, K8QXO Bob, and WB8ZGH Mike assisted during the LCHS Civil War encampment.

Lorain County: Block 10 includes hours for May 31st training session and weekly net training sessions.

Week 24 of the Section Emergency Coordinator's weekly notes..

Ohio SEC Notes & Stuff - Week 24 - 2014

Ohio HF Emergency Preparedness Net. Tues at 7PM on 3850 kHz (+/-)
Ohio Digital Emergency Net (OHDEN) Tues at 8PM. 7072 kHz USB.

This week's Ohio SEC Notes & Stuff will be short and sweet! Greetings and salutations from the Northeast corner of the Buckeye State where the temperature is currently 72 degrees and sunny.

As I mentioned last week, I have been briefed by ARRL HQ about Mike Corey's article and presentation at Dayton Hamvention. I was going to go over some of it this week but I have been totally busy with working six days a week at AES and still find the time to make it to important meetings and assisting with public service events. So, I don't have anything written up yet. However, I intend on sharing the clarifications with ya'll in next week's Ohio SEC Notes & Stuff. Trust me, what I read even made me wonder what's up too so I feel it's important to go over it with you.

I was reading my digital version of July QST and what did I see on page 70? The ARRL 2013 Simulated Emergency Test results!! And guess what? Thanks to all those who participated and those who submitted SET reports, Ohio Section took third place out of all 71 Sections!! There is no way would could have ever done that without our volunteers and leaders. Many thanks for making the Buckeye State shine amongst the rest.

I am still looking for volunteers to staff water stops or what I call "aqueous distribution outposts" for the 2014 American Cancer Society Pan Ohio Hope Ride. Check out the attached document for water stop locations. Anyone interested is asked to contact me directly so I can get them added to the volunteer roster and advise POHR Staff.

Kudos to Columbiana County Emergency Coordinator Gary Amato KB8HTU for following the Ohio Section Emergency Response Plan Wednesday night. Gary had a severe thunderstorm roll through Lisbon, Ohio where it's believed to have had a tornado touch down causing damage through town. Gary called his District Emergency Coordinator and got no answer. He then called me while I was at the Geauga County ARES meeting. I didn't answer because I didn't know who it was. I listened to my voice mail shortly after and called him right back. I then notified the Ohio Section Manager. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how it's done.

Just a friendly reminder for all ARES leaders including Assistant Emergency Coordinators and Official Emergency Stations...please ensure you have hard copies and electronic copies of the Ohio Section ARES Roster and the Ohio Section Emergency Response Plan (OSERP). Waiting for an emergency or disaster to download these documents from the ARES Secured Area which is located on the ARES page of the Ohio Section website www.arrl-ohio.org. Feel free to contact Assistant SEC Mark KB8YMN or myself should you need any assistance. Anyone needing assistance with username or password should contact the webmaster at n8sy@n8sy.com.

That's all for this week. Thank you for everything you do for amateur radio. Have a nice weekend everyone.

Week 23 of the Section Emergency Coordinators Notes..

Ohio SEC Notes & Stuff - Week 23 - 2014
Ohio HF Emergency Preparedness Net. Tues at 7PM on 3850 kHz (+/-)
Ohio Digital Emergency Net (OHDEN) Tues at 8PM. 7072 kHz USB.

Greetings and salutations from the Northeast corner of the Buckeye State where the temperature is 73 degrees and cloudy.

A reminder to all volunteers...stay hydrated. Sometime we get all wrapped up in the event we forget to stay hydrated. The American Heart Association has a great website with information on how and what to drink. According to the website, "Not just for athletes or exercise." "Hydration isn’t just important during physical activity. Sitting in the sun on a hot or humid day, even if you aren’t exercising, can also cause your body to need more fluids."

The American Cancer Society Pan Ohio Hope Ride is July 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th, 2014. It's only a 328 mile bicycle ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati in four days with over 500 cyclists. Amateur radio plays a key role in situational awareness not only for the staff but also the participants in this event. We're looking for amateur radio volunteers to staff strategic locations, water stops, dangerous or misleading intersections, and railroad tracks on all four days of the ride. Volunteers who would like to be stationed at the water stops need to contact me at w8dec@arrl.net so I can get them added to volunteer roster and notify the POHR staff. Please note, we're hoping to have enough volunteers to have more than one at each water stop on all four days of the ride. See attached for water stop locations to find one near you. Volunteers stationed at strategic locations, dangerous or confusing intersections, and railroad tracks throughout the ride will be assigned by their Emergency Coordinator or their designee. More information including maps can be found at www.panohiohoperide.org. More than likely there will be minor changes to the route between now and the event so please do not print them until we're close to the event. The communications plan is being tweaked from last year and will be out at a later date. Feel free to contact me at w8dec@arrl.net should you have any questions.

We're just over three weeks from one of the largest amateur radio on the air events in the World. Of course I am talk about ARRL Field Day 2014. All I can say is I sure hope you get out to a Field Day site somewhere. It truly is an experience to remember. Check out http://www.arrl.org/field-day for more details and visit the Field Day Locator to find a site near you.

Congratulations to Geauga County EC Pat Karl N8ONI, Geauga County ARES, and the Geauga Amateur Radio Association for winning first place in the EOC Category of the 2013 Ohio QSO Party!

In final, I am sure many of you read the recent article in QST written by Mike Corey about some changes within the Field Organization particularly in the ARES program. I know some of you heard Mike Corey talk at Hamvention in the ARES Forum about the same changes. Even I couldn't help but scratch my head and ask, what does all this mean? I have been briefed by HQ with some clarifications and I intend on sharing those with you next week in my Ohio SEC Notes & Stuff so we're all on the same page.

That's all for this week. Many thanks for everything you do for amateur radio.
