Ohio ARES Monthly Activity for August, 2017

District 1
Total figures include District 1 Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Nets and District 1 Skywarn Net. District 1 Traffic and Training net handled 99 pieces of traffic with 131 check ins for a total of 397 minutes in 31 sessions in the month of August.
Seneca County-EC Scott Rosenburger KE8JC Report submitted by AEC Steve Tarbert KC8ZKC  Seneca Co ARES had a busy August. We had 2 Skywarn Nets, a Solar Eclipse Net, and provided communications for the Seneca East Cross Country Classic.
Huron County-EC Craig Franklin KD8KWU 2 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Communications for Norwalk Triathlon Special Event Station, Marblehead Lighthouse.

Wood County-EC Eric Willman WD8LEI I've been counting net sessions wrong-corrected here Meeting with WCEMA director, programmed 30+ radios for EMA to include new frequencies coordinated in Wood County for EMA use. EMA director offered 12 UHF public safety radios to be reprogrammed for ham use during emergencies. EC will be reprogramming radios exclusively for ARES use per director. Continued support from BGSU-EMA director working together for ARES in disaster plans at BGSU. Continuous work with WC Sheriff to promote ARES. Amateur radio is now installed in county dispatch console for ham use and additional assets are being deployed at WCSO tower sites. EC added DMR in sheriff's (KB8BOI) cruiser and teaching new ham capabilities. Working with WC Commissioner LaHote to secure donation of solar panels from First Solar for ARES use. Still thinking though storage, transportation, and deployment issues. While not an ARES asset, EC has coordinated and deployed a networked DMR repeater for worldwide use during an emergency.
Lucas County-EC Lowell Kern KD8KXD  LCARES provided radio communications for the Sylvania SuperKids and the Sylvania Triathlon. We also took part in the National Great Lakes Museum First Responders Fest.

Wyandot County-EC Ron Wilch KE8PX The Wyandot County Hams met at the Wyandot Memorial Hospital Thursday evening August 10th. We discussed the Bucyrus Best Wurst Bicycle Tour on August 19th where we had two operators help with route safety communications. \"73\"

Defiance Co. ARC provided communications for the Annual Hot Air Balloon Fest. Van Wert Co. assisted the County Fair Board, EMA, and County Sheriff's Department. 
Paulding Co. is putting together a Tri- County Set with Defiance and Van Wert Counties using Black Swan 17 as a template.

District 3
DISTRICT 3 SUMMARY:  100% of Nine Counties reporting: 295 Members (+2 change), 102 Total Events (63 Voice Net Sessions, 16 Digital Net Sessions, 18 Meetings-Drills-Training-Tests, 5 Public Service Events and 0 Emergency Operations for 704 Total Man-Hours.
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY:  (19 members):  5 weekly voice net sessions and 1 other ARES events for a total of 6 events and 52 man-hours.
CLARK COUNTY:  (33 members):  4 weekly net sessions and 3 other ARES events for a total of 7 events and 54 man-hours.  
DARKE COUNTY:  (14 members):  4 weekly voice net sessions, 0 Public Service Event, 0 Emergency Operations and 0 other ARES events for a total of 4 events and 12 man-hours.
GREENE COUNTY:  (55 members):  20 weekly voice nets, 6 weekly digital nets, 2 Public Service Events, 0 Emergency Operations and 7 other ARES related activities for a total of 35 events and 243 man-hours.  Comments: Weekly Net participation: GCARES, GCARES/MVMA Mesh Discussion, BARC, UVARC, GCARES Digital, OHFEN and OHDEN.  Other activities: Continuing Mesh and Winlink installations, demonstrations, testing & training; two served agency training and planning sessions; equipment maintenance and Section Conference.
LOGAN COUNTY (RACES UNIT):  (10 members):  4 weekly voice net sessions and 1 other RACES activity for a total of 5 events and 20 man-hours.
MIAMI COUNTY:  (25 members, +1):  9 weekly voice nets, 4 weekly digital nets, 0 Public Service Events, 0 Emergency Operations and 1 other ARES related activities for a total of 14 events and 73 man-hours.  Comments: MCES ARES/RACES Net 145.23(-): 8/6, 8/13, 8/20, 8/27, 147.21(+): 8/3, 8/10, 8/17, 8/24, 8/31, Four Digital nets using MT63-2KL on 145.23. The Miami County Club conducted it's first transmitter (fox/bunny) hunt to train new operators in how to use their HTs and directional antennas to locate a signal. Overall the hunt went very well with the new operators learning about trying to locate a transmitter and use of directional antenna along with determining directions based on signal reflections off of buildings.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY:  (85 members, +1):  4 weekly voice net sessions, 4 weekly digital net sessions, 0 Public Service Events, 0 Emergency Operations and 2 other ARES related events for a total of 10 events and 62 man-hours.  Comments: Several members participated in a local CERT training exercise which incorporated APRS in tracking search crews. Two ARES Officers were deployed to Texas to assist with Hurricane Harvey disaster relief efforts. Mike Carter, W8BSI with the Ohio Task Force 1 and Gary Clark, KC8TND with the Dayton Chapter of the American Red Cross.
PREBLE COUNTY:  (15 members):  4 weekly net sessions, 2 Public Service Event, 0 Emergency Operations and 2 other ARES events for a total of 8 events and 23 man-hours.  Comments: Quite a month.  Beginning to see more new calls on the weekly net.  Getting emails to ARES website expressing interest in ARES.  PCARES representative was present for a planning meeting for Wayne County Indiana EMA and ARES/RACES for upcoming communications drill in October. Preble County ARES provided information and advice for the event.
SHELBY COUNTY:  (39 members):  4 weekly net sessions, 2 digital net sessions, 1 Public Service Event, 0 Emergency Operations and 1 other ARES event for a total of 8 events and 144 man-hours.  Comments: 4 weekly Sunday evening voice nets, 2 Bi-monthly Digital nets, 1 Monthly meeting and training session Shelby County Relay for Life Aug. 4 & 5.
DISTRICT 3 ACTIVITIES:  5 District 3 ARES weekly voice net sessions for a total of 5 events and 22 man-hours.

District 4
Clinton County: E-ops hours were in support of the National Weather Service office at Wilmington.
Hamilton County: Provided support for the ARDF Championships; EMA "standby" duty for Cincinnati Black Family Reunion; "standby" duty for eclipse, and we assisted tracking a High Altitude Balloon launch during the eclipse. 
from the DEC: bikeMS and its 4 route options in 2 states and 4 ARES districts rode again in early August. Thank you to volunteers far and wide for your cooperation!

District 5
Summit County - Ken Dorsey - KA8OAD This month we ran communications for the Goodyear 1/2 Marathon and 10K. It was a great day for the race and we experienced no major incidents. Pictures of the event are included. If you look at the bottom right most picture, on the left side of the picture you will see a part of the original Goodyear blimp hangar at the Akron regional airport. 
Mahoning County - Dave Brett, KD8NZF Hosted DMR presentation by Ken Dorsey, KA8OAD, conducted 2nd FLDIGI class at Canfield Library, did interview with WKBN TV27 in support of Mahoning United Way Day of Caring/Red Cross Lake to River smoke detector installation project. 
Columbiana County- Donald Kemp, NN8B COLUMBIANA COUNTY ARES WORKS WITH THE EMA, CERT AND THE LEPC AND THE FAIR BOARD TO GIVE FAIRGOERS SAFETY AND SELF HELP INFORMATION. ARES MEMBERS WATCHED WEATHER RADAR FOR THE FAIR BOARD AND REPORTED TO SECURITY ON ANY WEATHER SITUATIONS. ARES HANDLED 2 FIRST AID EVENTS WITH INDIVIDUALS STOPPING BY OUR LOCATION BY CALLING FIRST AID ON THEIR RADIO CHANNEL. WE HAD MANY INDIVIDUALS STOP BY TO INQUIRE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO AND WE GAVE THEM ARRL BROCHURES AND DISCUSSED HAM RADIO WITH THEM. MORSE CODE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE DONE AND MANY PEOPLE STOPPED BY WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MODE. THE NEW FT8 MODE WAS DEMONSTRATED AND SOME TRAINING WAS DONE FOR OPERATORS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE MODE.
Stark County - Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark Co ARES completed 5 public service nets for the month of August that totaled 200 check-ins. August 5th concluded our summer public service event schedule with the Annual Pro football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Grand Parade. Over 30 volunteers provided 180 hours of community service during this event. Our volunteers provided support communications during multiple segments of the parade; float staging; medical support; route monitoring and demarshaling. This years event marks 27 years of communications support to this nationally televised parade. Parade Chairman Pete Trumper expressed his gratitude for our solid commitment to this event and our community. Complete details are covered on our website at www.wd8aye.org.

Licking: We had the Pelotonia roll through the county on the 5th, Bret KD8SCL was able to monitor the comms on MARCS and was relay between the check points and command/net control. We had 2 severe weather nets this month, thankfully no severe damage was reported. On a sad note, We lost one of our AECs on Saturday September 2, Jim Williams N8IBR passed away suddenly. Jim was an active member of several clubs here in Licking Co. as well as Knox Co. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends and he will be sadly missed. 
Madison:
Marion:  Provided public service for the Marion County Fairgrounds Tractor show. Great opportunity to let the public see who we are and what we can do. Revisited and updated the current ARES roster including re-evaluated the special deputy roster with the Marion County Sheriff office.
Union: We had an uneventful month for August. We have been learning more about DMR and trying to remember to check into the Ohio DMR net on Wednesdays. We did have a 2 meter simplex net after the regular Thursday night net. It went well. Net participants were able to check the range of their radios. That was followed by a good discussion about antennas and what repeaters everyone was able to bring up and use from their locations.

District 8
Counties reporting: Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto EC comments: 
Athens: Put Athens County ARES members in standby mode in anticipation of possible heavy rains and flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey as they passed through the Ohio Valley. Fortunately, no call-up required. ACARA and SCARF will participate in Ohio State Parks on the Air under Field Day conditions. ACARA will activate Stroud\'s Run SP as W8UKE and Jackson Lake SP as N8SUZ. SCARF will activate Burr Oak Lake SP as KD8AAV and as a special event station to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of Burr Oak Lake. The Buckeye Trail Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, October 7. 
Gallia: Hours include one activation of SKYWARN Net 08/22/2017 totaling 10.5 man hours. DMR is becoming more active in the area and one DMR repeater is working in Gallia county at this time.
Lawrence: We have joined with the Lawrence County EMA to offer classes in Basic NIMS, 100b, 200b, 700a, and 800b. First class is 9/9/17 and is open to the public. For more information contact us at: lawrencearesraces@gmail.com. 
Scioto: Continuing to plan a fall communications drill. Monitoring traffic from National Disaster Declaration for any health and welfare checks. DEC comments: Nice articles in Huntington, WV and Ironton, OH papers about appointment of new EC Eddie Jenkins. Several clubs activating for Ohio State Parks on the Air on September 9.

District 9
COSHOCTON CO: Along with the regular first Wednesday of each month digital net, which starts on the 145.23 pl71.9 ARES repeater, (see w8cca.org) we have another weekly digital net after the W8CCA club net which starts at 21h each Sunday on 147.045,pl,71.9. During the month the Club,W8CCA and ARES/Skywarn set up a table at the Newcomerstown ,Ohio community event at the high school. We were setup by Red Cross and EMS displays. 10 events, 47 hours. GUERNSEY CO: During the monthly ARES training meeting discussion was held as to what training and exercises to pursue. Also we had a discussion on how to encourage more participation in ARES. MORGAN CO: The Morgan Amateur Radio Club participated in the Ohio QSO Party from a public park in McConnelsville. We ran the whole time on battery power, and ran radios on multiple bands. DEC: All active ARES counties reported this month. Thanks Guys. Morgan & Tuscarawas Counties are newly activated and are just starting their operations. This month I will be attending club meetings in Belmont, Muskingum, and Washington Counties in an effort to develop ARES programs in their counties. G. Sonny Alfman W8FHF, DEC-9.

District 10
Ashtabula County: No comments. 
Cuyahoga County: Assisted with active shooter drill at Cleveland State University. Also supported the Rock Hall Half Marathon. Additionally, ARES members participated in many other events including the MS150 bike ride and the Bellefaire Biathlon. 
Geauga County: Currently working the Geauga County Fair. This will carry over to September. 
Lake County: No comments submitted. 
Lorain County: No comments submitted. 
Medina County: Medina EOC Comm Unit is working on a Comm Trailer for the Medina EOC. It was used by other groups and left sitting until the EOC called it back and want to make it into a comm trailer. It will take a lot of work and in the end will have at least three operating positions, storage and a lounge/meeting space. It also has a generator and a/c. 

Ohio SEC: Visited Lorain County ARES. Worked with Matt on Black Swan exercise (Ohio SET). Heavily involved as a member of Hurricane Watch Net for Harvey into Texas, and set up for Irma/Jose/Katia.
