DEC's REPORTS..

Subject: Report for June, 2014

All 10 District Emergency Coordinators reporting.

District 1.. Erie; Hancock; Huron; Lucas; Ottawa; Sandusky; Seneca; Wood

District 2.. Allen; Auglaize; Defiance; Fulton; Henry; Mercer; Paulding; Putnam; Van Wert; Williams

Comment Public service numbers reflect Field Day Operations.

District 3.. Champaign; Clark; Darke; Greene; Miami; Montgomery; Preble; Shelby

The District 3 Net is was held on each Wednesday on 145.11 and usually has between 15 and 20 check-ins each week.

• PREBLE: NJ8BB Gary Hollenbaugh EC for Preble had medical emergency. Alex Martin served as EC for one week while Gary was recuperating Preble ARES and Preble ARA held 2014 Field Day and two County commissioners observe operations. They asked many interesting questions and promised support for the group. Brian Devilbus KD8QFM conducted CPR refresher course for ARES members. Six members were present.

• MONTGOMERY: 5 Weekly Nets 6-18-2014 Skywarn Event 6-22-2014 Testing 6-28 & 29, 2014 Field Day DARKE: We had a good "Field Day" No records were broken I am sure but we had a good time, the station was up and running for the full 24hrs. We made a total of 225 contacts, had 19 people show up, had 3 youths under 10 years of age on the air and 1 new license holder as well as 2 unlicensed adults who were interested in learning about radio. Over all I think we had a successful event.

District 4.. Adams; Brown; Butler; Clermont; Clinton; Hamilton; Highland; Warren

E-ops hours were in support of the National Weather Service office at Wilmington. I did the Field Day tour again this year, trying to hit every site that was published on the Field Day locator and that was in operation when I got there. Started with the "home club" which is Queen City Emergency Net. Put about 45 CW QSOs in the log, met with our Red Cross primary contact (who is now KK4ZOF), and made sure things were off and running.

4-5pm was spent at Milford ARC. They did a nice job with a "welcoming committee" and were rolling up contacts while I was there.

Next stop was Clinton/Highland combined operation at Levo Farm. Rained, big time, en-route. Dinner was great! The setting sun was pretty spectacular too. This group was working really hard on the 2-m/6-m side of things in addition to the usual low bands. I'm humbled by their warm reception. Then it was off to Cowan Lake State Park to catch up with a couple long-time friends @ W8C. Put 45ish CW QSOs and an SSB or two in their log. Ate more dinner. Fought off insects. But their 1A was definitely the in the spirit of the FD. Miles to go before I sleep (it's 1130pm now), time to get on the road. Arrived in Middletown for Dial ARC, a little after midnight. Still was welcomed by N8HP, and noticed the youth movement on 40m for the night shift. Observed some mentoring, even in the wee hours. This is also the spirit of the weekend. Back to the "home club" to check in around 2am, things are going well, the overnight shift is working. Home by 230am, 30 more minutes of contacts from my own 1C operation, and in bed by 3ish. Up before 7, and headed west. OhKyIn ARS has several stations on, and makes full use of the "500 foot circle" to be sure. Found 2 ECs and an AEC there, obviously a place to be. It's 930am, time to drive north to Butler County. In Millville the Butler Co. ARA group is most hospitable and cranking away. They are very in to the "experimental" nature of Field Day -- and most grateful to a local Home Depot for providing a generator when their usual source did not work out. Now east to Butler Co. VHF Association. Their operation was not the victim of nearby lightning this year and they have a very good idea about "next steps" for the radio room that their host site provides. Heard some historical perspectives of which I was previously unaware. Almost time to close out the home club operation, but first a stop at Voice of America. Father/son team operating here, CW sequestered away (isn't this always so?) in a motor home.

More opinions on good/bad/ugly of ARRL and ARES. And that was really the point of the exercise. I want/need to know what the district is thinking. Back to the home club to secure the log files, and equipment, and then home, with 75 1C QSOs in my own log. Not too shabby. I think I'll do it again. If I can find a copilot to log and I can make more QSOs between sites. Coming up in July is a little time off-work for the DEC, and the Pan Ohio Hope Ride which impacts many!

District 5.. Carroll; Columbiana; Mahoning; Portage; Stark; Summit; Trumbull; Tuscarawas

• Stark County ARES completed 4 public service training nets and one general meeting for the month of June that totaled 166 check-ins. There were no public service events held during June. Stark Co ARES had their summer meeting with ten attending. Appointment Certificates were issued to newly appointed Assistant EC's, Mike Palmer, KD8ENV - Net Manager and Mike Lackney, KB8MIB - Skywarn Operations. Planning continues for the Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Community and Grand Parade events to be held in July.

• Columbiana County: Final FEMA evaluated drills for Beaver Valley Power Station, 1 severe wx event from micro burst causing many trees down and village being almost comletely out of power for almost 24 hrs.

• Summit County: This month we worked radio communications for the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure bike event. This event was held on field day weekend but we were able to get enough volunteers to man almost all water stops, 3 SAG vehicles and Net Control.

District 6.. Ashland; Crawford; Holmes; Knox; Marion; Medina; Morrow; Richland; Wayne; Wyandot

Crawford: Report filed – no comment

Knox: We have had a busy month! We helped with the Tour de Cure and GOBA events and also had a blast during Field Day. We will be helping with the Pan Ohio Hope Ride this month, as well as putting some new gear in place at our county EOC.

Marion: Like everyone else we had a great Field Day. The food was fantastic, weather cooperated, the food was fantastic, the antennas all went up without too much trouble, the food was fantastic, the antennas stayed up, the food was fantastic, more contacts were made this year than last, the food was fantastic, had a great crowd of interested people stop by to see amateur radio in action, the food was fantastic, the gang was very pleased that SM Scott Yonally paid a visit and a fun time was had by all.... and did we mention …. the food was fantastic.

Medina: The public service event was the "Medina County Emergency Services Conference." There were classes and vendor displays for firemen. Out communications trailer was visited by fire service members and they were impressed. We helped place vendor displays and directed traffic to appropriate parking lots at the high school.

Richland: Richland County ARES had four weekly nets, two days of GOBA and one SKYWARN net.

Wayne: Our busy month is behind us. We provided communications for a 100 mile bike ride, plus the Great Ohio Bike Adventure and a 100 mile run (yes you read correctly, a 100 mile run). Had a good time at Field Day and decent number of contacts.

Wyandot: The Wyandot County Hams enjoyed Field Day at Wharton Park again this year.We shared the park with other community activities including a chicken BBQ and an evening outdoor movie that was all open to the public. The local newspaper sent a reporter and interviewed several of our members for an article in the Upper Sandusky paper. Fun was had by all. "73"

District 7.. Delaware; Fairfield; Fayette; Franklin; Hardin; Licking; Logan; Madison; Pickaway; Union

Delaware Like many groups, our big activity was Field Day, running 4A with GOTA, Satellite and VHF. 80 People were present for the DELARA hog roast. We enjoyed the visit from Scott, N8SY. MESH setup was a part of the operation, we're getting requests now from public safety agencies! We did work a couple traditional events. Training was on net operation during a dam-break inundation.

• Fairfield None

• Fayette NO EC

• Franklin Field Day - COARES held Field Day at St. Andrew Christian Church, 1985 Swansford Drive, Dublin, OH 43016. The location was good, very visible from Smokey Row Road, a major north/south road in the area so people knew we were there and who we were. Field Day was well attended by COARES hams as well as other folks who stopped by to see what we were doing. There were about 40 hams who came out to either help set up, spent time making contacts on the radio or just came to visit and support COARES. Although some storms moved through the area Saturday late afternoon and evening causing us to shut down for a while until they passed, everyone had a good time and overall it was a big success for COARES.

• Hardin NO EC

• Licking June is always a busy month in Licking County. Once again this year we helped provide communications support for the Tour de Cure. This bicycle tour included routes of 30, 60, and 100 miles through Delaware, Knox, and Licking county with approximately 300 riders. Our net control station located in Johnstown was again able to provide service to repeaters in all three counties. The organizers once again did an outstanding job of planning the event, and we were fortunate to have excellent weather and no serious personal injuries. Field Day was again a big success for this year. We had three active public locations representing different groups and with different, but exciting, approaches to the event. Lots of public participation, lots of good food, and lots of contacts! Progress continues with the acquisition and outfitting of ! the CERT/ARES trailer.

• Logan NO EC

• Madison July will be a busy month with several bike tours coming through our area and a few local festivals which like our assistance. We did add one new member. All is fine in Madison County.

• PERRY COUNTY ARES members participated in field day with Central Ohio Operators Klub Extra-Novice (COOKEN). Perry County ARES is in the process of working with the Perry County EMA Director to place a Repeater on the EMA tower located the Perry County Engineers Facility. Pickaway Members of the PCoARES met for a planning meeting on how best to build the inside of the enclosed trailer that was donated to us by the Pickaway County Commissioners for our communication needs. Also, June 23-28th was the Pickaway County Fair. PCoARES was set up with the EMA and Box65 passing out ham radio brochures and answering any questions that the public had about amateur radio communications. Union Held field day with the EMA squad parked at the Wal Mart parking lot to raise public awareness.

District 8.. Athens; Gallia; Hocking; Jackson; Lawrence; Meigs; Perry; Pike; Ross; Scioto; Vinton

Counties reporting: Athens, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Scioto County EC Comments: Athens: Athens County ARA had 16 members participate in Field Day, operating one alpha from the Athens County

District 9.. Belmont; Coshocton; Guernsey; Harrison; Jefferson; Monroe; Morgan; Muskingum; Noble; Washington

• COSHOCTON CO: This month GOBA came into the county for three days. Net Control was at lake park each day with backup NC as well. The route was manned approximately every 5 miles. NC was maintained contact with Wayne and Holmes co on the first day and was in communications with Tuscarawas co on day two. On day three we maintained contact with Knox co and at times acted as NC. We also were setup for communications with the various GOBA frequencies as needed. We also had MARCS with which we were in communications throughout the event with Coshocton REACT, Coshocton EMA and GOBA Communications Director, N8SUZ . A good event for ARES. Thanks KB8HEA for a job well done and to all Coshocton Co ARES and to Coshocton County AMateur Radio Association. A great Amateur Radio exercise in which we all worked together as a team. Also during the month another event, FIELD DAY, was also good training for ARES. A great job in organizing this from the Coshocton Co Amateur Radio Association, Mike, NF8U, Club President. Steve Wheatcraft, Coshocton Co. EC

• GUERNSEY CO: No Comments

• JEFFERSON CO: JCARES was invited to participate in the county table top exercise for emergency preparedness. Robert M Carson Jr., N8CUX

• MONROE CO: June was a somewhat busy month for us. We had our first Emergency Operation on the 28th. A oil well fire in my county in which I was on scene with the Fire Dept. I was asked to put my guys on standby since there was a fear of the bands getting over crowded with radio traffic. I had my one available person at the time at the EOC for 5hrs waiting to start handling traffic. I did relay a few messages from the scene to the EOC via 2 meters and they were handled very well. Although there were no high priority messages it did prove we would be of use in a large scale event in the county where many different departments are using the public safety bands at once. Jeremey Taylor, KD8MTK

• NOBLE CO: No Comments

• BELMONT & MORGAN CO: NO REPORT RECEIVED

District 10.. Ashtabula; Cuyahoga; Geauga; Lake; Lorain

Many ARES members participated at various Field Day sites throughout the district. A good time was had by all.

• Ashtabula County: Field Day went off without a hitch and we all had a blast! Local EMA, Commissioners, Fire and Rescue all showed up as well as the Red Cross and other guests. We now have two upgraded licensees and 2 more ready to test. We also have added one more to the list of member VE's. Despite low sun spots we managed to come VERY close to meeting the numbers from last year so we consider 2014 a success! Here's to another fine year with a fine group!

• Cuyahoga County: Major events this month included an off season table top drill meeting for Burke Airport Certification. Several PSA occurred with planning for future events were added to the hours. Events included Bike for Beck, JCC-J-Ride and the GG9-Triathlon.

• Geauga County: ARES members helped a lot of different groups for public service and had some EMA sponsored training.

• Lake County: None ***

• Lorain County: Block 10 includes hours for Sunday night nets and for training session held on June 21st. Lorain ARES was honored to have the Lorain County EMA Director, Tom Kelley, attend their June 21st session
