Stark County - Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 3 public service training nets for the month of July that totaled 88 check-ins. July begins the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival here in Stark Co. Our first event was the Community Parade on Sunday, July 23rd. We provided both route support and medical communications during this event as well as packet radio digital relay of parade units from Staging to the TV Production Van. 12 operators provided 52 total hours to this event. Complete details are covered on our website at www.wd8aye.org.
Columbiana County - Don Kemp, NN8B Columbiana County ARES is manning the EMA's communications trailer at the Columbiana County Fair. This will be from 31 July 2017 through 6 August 2017. ARES maintains communications with the fair security and first aid via public service radios. ARES watches weather radio and reports adverse weather conditions to security. ARES continuously demonstrates Amateur Radio with a public display of an active radio station outside the communications trailer. Amateur Radio information from the ARRL is available to anyone interested in Ham Radio.

Summit - Ken Dorsey, KA8OAD This month we worked communications for the Stow July 4th parade. Later this month myself and one other member spent two hours at Akron Children's Hospital checking the amateur radio equipment staged there for emergency use. After we completed our testing we sat down and discussed our role as backup emergency communications if it was necessary for us to be activated. The hospital staff was very impressed with our emergency plan and preparations and requested that from now on we plan on being included in all future yearly emergency drills held at the hospital.

SADDENED TO REPORT PASSING OF FAIRFIELD CO EC ED CAMPBELL, WD8PGO, AND MARION CO ARES MEMBER DON FREEMAN, KD8BKT

Union: We had a busy July. We provided radio communications for the MS Central Ohio Challenge Bike Ride July 8th that goes from Dublin to Bellefontaine and back with only 2 weeks to get things organized. Many thanks to everyone that was able to help out with it. We had a total of 14 people help out with it from Union, Logan, Delaware, and Franklin Counties. We were able to have coverage at all the rest stops on the course and at the start and finish line at Coffman Park in Dublin. Scott N8JYF from Logan County was mobile on the bike course and logged 200 miles on his Prius. It was good having him mobile on the course. He was able to redirect riders at an intersection that was mismarked due to a road closure until it was able to be remarked. We used both the Marysville 145.35 repeater and the Bellefontaine 147.000 repeater for the event. We also helped out with parking cars with the Union County EMA at the Union County Fair when they expected a higher than usual attendance for a concert. We had our 3rd Monday monthly meeting and discussed how the bike ride went and what could be done to make it better for the next time. This time we only had 1 amateur radio operator riding with the situation leader SAG. It would be better to have an amateur radio operator riding with all the SAG vehicles to provide communication. I was able to help out with the Delaware ARES group with the Ironman event. I was at a run aid station. That was a well ran event and I was happy to be part of it.

Knox: 5 ARES Sunday night nets conducted with a total of 52 contacts made. The net controllers were: Don Russell W8PEN Tom Evans KD8HSA Terry Windsor KE8ANS William Bradley KC8BB

Franklin: no comments

Licking: Licking County: We had a busy month with 3 severe weather nets and 1 EOC activation. The EOC was activated due to the heavy rain & flooding in the county, the EC, Bret KD8SCL was activated to the EOC and the AEC\'s and members were placed on stand-by in case of activation. Bret was monitoring the repeater for flooding reports & road closures and also monitored the local radar, news outlets, helped to monitor 3 MARCS radios, reported important information to the EMA Director Sean Grady. There was significate property damage due to the flooding in the Buckeye Lake, Hebron & Heath areas. I-70 was closed for several hours in both directions with the traffic being rerouted to Rt.40. Thankfully there were no loss of life.

Fairfield: Independence Day Parade Tour De Cause Lancaster Festival

Marion: On July 12 we lost a vital member of our group. He will be greatly missed. Silent Key to KD8BKT Don Freeman. We managed to get through a couple of events that we provided a public service to, the Marion County Fair and we helped out Delaware County with the Bicycle portion of the 2017 Ironman Triathlon. RIP KD8BKT/SK

Delaware: What a month for Delaware ARES. Working with our club DELARA, we wrapped up a difficult but successful Field Day weekend only to finalize planning and cover the Ironman 70.3 mile triathlon. Logging 330 hours for this event took manpower from our group, Marion County and Union County ARES to cover a 1.2mile swim, 56 mile bike ride running north of Marion and into Morrow County before finishing in Delaware County, Add to that a half-marathon of 13.1 miles and more than 2300 athletes, many of which were out there trying to better themselves. ARES has been part of the Ironman 70.3 Ohio since it came to Delaware in 2016, at their invitation. According to the Race Director, they\'ve had ARES operators at all of their events because we provide coverage and expertise they just can\'t hire. Our plans were coordinated directly with the event sponsors, police and sheriff\'s departments, and fire/EMS chiefs along with the EMA. We were the first and may be only ARES group in the nation to work MESH video coverage into our planning and efforts to make MESH a part of our emergency planning with permanent nodes being added and portable nodes in development. It is a work in progress and showing promise.

District 8
Counties reporting: Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto EC comments:
Athens: Hybrid online/classroom session for ICS-200 held. Special event station K8R from 08/01 to 08/15 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio. Will repeat 11/01 to 11/15/2017

Gallia: Additional hours this month due to an ARES meeting held this month, plus the activation and re-activation of the Skywarn net. During the month of July, in addition to heavy rain and possible flooding, an EF0 tornado was confirmed in the Pomeroy Pike area of Meigs County. Our Skywarn group covered this event as our Skywarn net leader lives in the Meigs County area. The Skywarn net was active in the month of July. We have successfully launched a Skywarn Net as a service of ARES and the MOVARC here. The net meets each Thursday night at 8:00 PM local time on 442.650, 91.5 tone. We are averaging 13 check ins each session.
Hocking: Hocking County ARES was called out on July 11 by our County EMA director. A severe thunderstorm had ripped through the Murray City area leaving them with no power, phone lines or cell service. We opened an Emergency Net at the county EOC and sent our new ECom trailer and several operators to Murray City. With some difficulty do the terrain we finally established communications but were released a short time later after a state EMA MARCS radio truck arrived on the scene and took over. The new ECom trailer performed very well and we learned some things about relaying signals out of a deep valley. We will be better prepared next time.
Lawrence: Our membership is starting to reflect our true count of active members. We should still continue to increase.

Pike: EOC radio room being rebuilt, hopefully back on the air by end of August. EC made application for local LEPC. Several counties are planning on training practice during Ohio State Parks on the Air.

District 9
Coshocton Co: On July 19 the Coshocton County EMA called a little after 11AM and asked that ARES be placed on standby as we might be needed to man the EMA/EOC radio room. A letter had been received at Coshocton municipal Court, reported at 1040am contained anthrax and also mentioned a bomb in a vehicle. Both of these statements turned out to be a hoax! I was not in the county so KL7RF was acting EC. I was able to help by making calls to all using the calling tree. I notified and kept informed the SEC and DEC. Thanks for offering resources if needed. Fortunately the assistance was not needed. ARES was activated when the EMA director called KL7RF a little before 1pm that he needed ARES at the EMA/EOC. KL7RF and KL7IUC and KE8XM responded in a timely fashion. Additional ARES were available during the event if needed. Thank-you KB8PXM, KC8YXY, KC8WX. As the threat was determined to be a hoax , ARES was released from activation a little after 4pm. We have a good working relationship with our EMA and the Director appreciated our response. Thanks to Coshocton ARES for a good job. On a lighter note, Coshocton ARES net has been scheduling training in traffic handling each Monday using radiograms and 213 forms On the 29th the Coshocton Amateur Radio Association with ARES and SKYWARN setup a special event station at the West Lafayette Homecoming. Thanks to KC8WX for the idea. Club president NF8U , KE8HEC and myself manned the station. See the W8CCA.ORG web site for pictures. DMR, 2m using fldigi, ARES repeater, and the OSSBN was used to pass some traffic from the event. A fun event. As always, OHDEN, and W8SGT nets are in the log from the county by KL7RF, KC8PUW, KC8WX. 73, AA8BN Coshocton EC
Tuscarawas Co.: I have 4 Hams working towards their 4 required FEMA Certifications but have not received confirmation of their completion yet. EC Brent Alan Gribble, N8BAG
