November 2018 District Activity Report

SEC Comments: Thanks to DEC’s for attending our DEC Conference this month. We talked at length about ARES Connect, and about some of the issues we face in ARES: specifically, the general aging of our population and how that affects our ability to respond; the need for alternate communications that will supplement our standard VHF FM voice;  and from what age group we can draw fresh volunteers.  We’ll incorporate some of these into the Ohio Emergency Response Plan over winter. I hope to have that complete by our April conference!     Over this winter, please have some meetings with your served agencies (and cultivate some new ones, like health and board of elections) to keep up to date with their plans and requirements!  Thank you for everything you do as you serve your community. I wish you all a very blessed Christmas with family and friends!

District 1

The Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net for November had 244 check ins handled 147 pieces of traffic in 483 minutes in 30 sessions. Figures include public service hours put in by the DEC and ADEC\'s. Work continues on the NORC-2 Hospital net and we are looking to expand into the surrounding Districts to participate.

Comments:  MCES ARES/RACES Net 145.23(-) held each Sunday evening at 2100hrs, 147.21 (+) held each Thursday at 2000hrs, Digital nets using MT63-2KL on 145.23 held each Sunday at 1900hrs & Wires X net on Sunday at 1800hrs.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY:  (88 members, +2 change):  3 weekly voice net sessions, 3 weekly digital net sessions (14 Net man-hours); 0 Public Service Events (0 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 2 other ARES related events (14 man-hours) for a total of 8 events and 28 man-hours.

Comments:  Three new members were recruited this month.  Preble County assisted Darke co. ARES with the annual horse parade in Greenville Ohio. Post were manned to assist with traffic control and crowd control, freeing up numerous Law Enforcement Officers.  One situation requiring Law Enforcement Officers was handled as emergency traffic. 

SHELBY COUNTY:  (39 members):  4 weekly net sessions; 1 digital net sessions (45 man-hours); 1 Public Service Event (50 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 2 other ARES events (44 man-hours); for a total of 8 events and 139 man-hours.

Comments:  4 Sunday Evening Nets; 1 C4FM Nets 2 Fundraiser 10-27 & 11-24; November 6 Sidney Winter Wonderland Parade.

DISTRICT 3 ACTIVITIES:  4 District 3 ARES weekly voice net sessions (38 Net man-hours); and 0 other District 3 activities (0 man-hours); for a total of 4 events and 38 man-hours.

District 4

This was a quiet month in District 4. Hamilton County is training on MESH networking, updating antennas at the regional EOC, and doing outreach on 88.3 FM (an all-volunteer broadcast station.)

District 5

District 5 EC Dennis Conklin AI8P has resigned effective immediately due to personal and family considerations.

District 7

Delaware County: New EC just getting started- Operation manual revised and ready, new alerting system in place (text and email), meeting with EMA Dir, established tracking program for time accounting and awards (local, secondary to connect). With EMA will have 13 top issues to work on (#1= tornado). Training meetings planned out for 2019. Working on contact with local hospital, Sheriff and Fire Chiefs. Will work on recruiting. Meanwhile, work on the Delaware station 2.0 at the Red Cross is nearing completion- new ARES desk with 3- 8800's and DMR plus HF as County Control Station.

Franklin County: A very slow month with the holiday season beginning. We continue to engage with ARES Connect. Final details are being worked out on a future AUXCOM class.

Union County: We have been working with FLDigi for the digital simplex net. I have been using ares connect. For some reason the numbers didn't match what I put in this form. I exported the report as a csv file and it wasn't very friendly unless you know what the text box numbers listed at the top of the columns are for. I then exported it as a PDF and got the numbers from it. The total according to ARES connect comes out to 40.75 hours total. See attached files for the ARES connect reports. We setup some mesh networking gear and got it talking with each other at our monthly meeting. That was fun. We are looking at starting a mesh network here in Union County.

Licking County; Hope everyone had a great and safe Thanksgiving. Several members had a chance to work on training this month and was able to take the "Stop the Bleed" training as well as a few ICS courses. A few members that are also members of the CERT Team helped out with the annual courthouse lighting in downtown Newark. LCEMA is gearing up for a move to a new location, we will be tearing down our equipment from the current EOC and moving it to the new EOC location. EC: Bret Stemen KD8SCL

Athens: Supported Bobcat Trail Marathon at Burr Oak Lake State Park on November 10 with 8 members

Hocking: HVARC once again did the lineup for our local Veterans Parade. An honor we always enjoy. Hocking County has started a Thursday night Rag Chew net. We meet on our repeater at 8:00pm and all operators are welcome to join in. Freq. is 147.345 with PL of 114.8 Lawrence: Lawrence county had our first class on DMR radios. We also provided communications for the Ironton Christmas Parade, and had our annual dinner and awards presentations. The Southern Ohio Amateur Radio Association, Inc. is proud to be the newest ARRL Special Services Club. The award was presented by Ohio Section Manager, Scott Yonally. The award was accepted by club President, Jim Rowe, N8TVO.

Pike: Participated in Southern Ohio SET Exercise with Scioto, Ross and Lawrence counties. Communications between counties established using each counties local repeater and simplex VHF. Verification of county deployment locations verified using local repeater and simplex VHF DEC comments: Congratulations to the Sunday Creek Amateur Radio Federation (SCARF) for winning first in their class in the 2018 Ohio State Parks on the Air and Athens County Amateur Radio Association for winning second in their class in OSPOTA. SCARFfest (Nelsonville Hamfest) coming up Sunday January 20, 2019 Tri County Career Center, 8 AM to noon. ARRL VE Session 10 AM.

District 9

GUERENSEY CO: ARES members assisted with the City of Cambridge Christmas parade. Richard Wayt, WD8SDH, EC

District 10

District 10: DEC Conference in Delaware was very worthwhile.

Ashtabula County: No comments submitted.

Cuyahoga County: There were no Cuyahoga County ARES meetings or nets in November. In spite of that, we logged 31.25 net hours from other nets. SkyWarn Spotter Training was well attended with 37 individuals. Members are becoming more comfortable with ARES Connect, however there have been a few errors with the system itself. CC ARES leaders attended several safety-related meetings this month that were held by other organizations. Leaders also created a list of topics to cover in 2019 and planned to recognize members who had outstanding participation this year. Certificates will be presented at the meeting in January 2019.

Geauga County: No comments submitted.

Lake County: Activated the Amateur radio room at the Lake County History Center during their Holiday Show. A good event to demo Amateur radio to the general public.

Lorain County: No comments submitted.

Medina County: Sorry late this month. Hard drive runs all the time and I wasted time trying to fix it with no success.

District 1
Totals include figures for the Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net and District Skywarn. The Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net for the month of October handled 183 pieces of traffic in 35 sessions in 608 minutes with 311 check ins. The District started a NORC-2 net in October to be done monthly. NORC-2 means Northern Ohio Regional Communications 2 meter net. This net will test each month the communication ability of all Hospitals, Nursing Home and medical facilities and EOC's in District 1 as well as District 2 following the Hospital Council of Northwest Ohio new radio grant program for eligible medical facilities. Included in this report is time spent by myself and Dan Stahl in visiting facilities to do radio set up or testing. Attached is the county by county EC's report. The club support the Troy Regional Cross Country Meet held 27th Oct in Troy with 10 operators providing communication across the track meet.

     Comments:  Gary Clark, KC8TND, was deployed as an American Red Cross Volunteer to support Hurricane Michael relief efforts. Approximately 21 amateurs participated in the annual SET exercise. “NVIS Antennas” was our program topic at our MoCo ARES Community Meeting.

PREBLE COUNTY:  (14 members):  4 weekly net sessions (2 Net man-hours); 3 Public Service Event (79 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 1 other ARES events (12 man-hours) for a total of 8 events and 93 man-hours.
     Comments:  Preble participated in security operation for the West Alexandria Oktoberfest on a Friday and Saturday night, 7pm to 7am. Coordination was made between local police and event organizers. This yearly activity made for a long cold night and the dedication of the members are greatly appreciated. Donuts for everyone! We conducted communications for the annual West Alexandria Oktoberfest antique car rally. Preble has been operating this event since 1978, 40 years. Operators were stationed around the county at check points that included scenic covered bridges. Time stamp and numbers of cars as they passed the check point were recorded and transmitted back to event organizers. New operators were teamed up with veteran operator for training. New procedures were implemented at NCS to make the flow of traffic more accurate and traceable. With both activities, security and car rally, it really stretches the members to commit and perform the activities—little sleep and being out of their comfort zone. This is a good exercise of what actual activations might be like. There has been a discussion opened up by the county EMA office and ARES to have members become CERT trained. And to reach out to our neighboring counties to expand fellowship and cooperation in operations. It is thought that the Eastern Indiana counties are an essential part of our "area" communications.

SHELBY COUNTY:  (39 members):  4 weekly net sessions; 2 digital net sessions (32 man-hours); 1 Public Service Event (10 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 3 other ARES events (65 man-hours); for a total of 10 events and 107 man-hours.

District 4
Brown County: We think Rick Coburn (NV8C) for his service as EC. We are in search of the next leader to fill this role.

Warren County: The County EMA reached out to the EC to determine staffing possibilities for an immediate activation related to POTUS visit. Clinton County: A very educational SET (8 ops for 72 person-hours.)

Hamilton County: SET participation (local/regional/beyond), Queen Bee Half Marathon (with help from volunteers from KY District 6), standby for a telephone outage in the Wyoming suburb.

District 5
Stark County, Terry Russ N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 5 public service nets for the month of October that totaled 105 check-ins. There were no public service events during the month but we participated in an information table at the Massillon Hamfest that included equipment demonstrations and numerous handouts. We continue to encourage our team members to register with the ARES Connect System.

District 6

District 7
Marion County: Hosted the Fall/Winter version of the National Weather Service SKYWARN. Very different but quite informative. Quiet month but a welcome break from our busy summer.

Fairfield County: Our ARES Team successfully completed a year-long project, making contact with the ISS, Astronaut Serena KG5TMT at 2:56 Zulu 10-31-2018 at tallmadge school Lancaster Ohio. All equipment was operated off grid.

Franklin County: FCOHARES participated in two public service events this month; The Crop Walk and the Columbus Marathon. Both of these events totaled 164 man hours as calculated by ARES Connect. Those figures may change as they are compared with handwritten notes. This month included a microwave node installation at Franklin County EM&HSoffice. That node installation completes a grant that connects the Ohio EMA, Franklin County EM&HSoffice and Delaware EMA. End point equipment remains to be connected at each location. The Delaware microwave link is approximately 24 air miles.

Union County: We had a good turnout for the SET in October. We worked with the Union County EMA and the Hope Center and Hospital. During the SET the EMA sent test messages out using Active 911, what they use to activate EMA members. I updated our ARES members with that information as also activated our ARES group for the SET. We focused on using FLDigi on 2 meters simplex this year using MT632KL to send out lists of information between the Hope Center and the ECC and the Hospital and the ECC. We discovered we needed a better antenna when we were at the hospital and also we needed to get everyone more familiar with FLDigi and get a couple more Signal link boxes to have on hand to use. The result from the SET was forming Union County ARES nets on Monday nights. We decided to model them after the Marion ARES groups Digi net. At 9 pm we start the net on the repeater, -145.35 tone 127.3, take check-ins and ask that stations indicate if they will be participating in the simplex diginet immediately following the repeater net. We then ask for any stations with traffic for the net, make announcements for our ARES group, and ask if anyone has any other information for the ARES group. Then we end the repeater net and QSY to 145.60 and start up the simplex digital net. We use a combination of voice and digital. We go through the check-in list from the repeater net, then ask for any other check-ins. We then go down through the list so everyone can send a digital message and determine who received it. If someone didn't receive it, the message will get re-transmitted by someone closer to that station. Everyone that participated in our first simplex diginet really enjoyed it and thought it was a lot of fun. The 3rd Monday of the Month we will have our face to face ARES meeting, so there won't be an ARES net on the repeater or a simplex digital net on those days. The Marion group meets on the last Thursday of the month (I think) so they don't have their diginet on that day.

Licking County; Had a busy first of the month with gearing up for the Ohio SET which went good and "Thanks" to those who were able to help. The EOC was open and operating but was unable to work HF. Work on the Red Cross is nearing completion with a few things to wrap up. Have kept in contact with the EMA Director Sean Grady about the incoming rainfall and flooding issues that have happened in the past here in the county. Planning for 2019 events and exercises have started. Looking forward to the rest of the year, with things starting to slow down a bit, it will be a good time to catch up on some on-line courses.  Counties reporting: Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto EC comments:

Athens: EC/DEC attended FEMA Mass Fatalities course in Jackson. ACARA/SCARF supported the Buckeye Trail Marathon in Shawnee on October 6 and the Komen Athens Race for the Cure on October 14. Next ACARA/SCARF event will be the Bobcat Trail Marathon at Burr Oak Lake on Saturday, November 10. ACARA is planning their annual Technician license preparation course Mondays, January 7 to March 11, 7-9 PM at the Athens Red Cross office.

Hocking: W8TUZ, N8BUS & W8RDS will be covering Hocking county from November 1st through the 14th.

Lawrence: Lawrence County ARES has been busy this month. In addition to the annual SET Exercise, our members took training in Damage Assessment. Weather Communications, and First Aid

Pike: Will participate with Scioto Co. for annual SET exercise Nov. 10th. Inter-county comm's will be tested.

Scioto: Planning November SET of Regional Power Outage effecting Southern Ohio and Northeastern Kentucky with communication capability verification with Kentucky and adjacent Ohio counties as well as County Dispatch and Shelter locations and hospitals to EOC
DEC comments: New antennas have been erected at the Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio Chapter Office in Athens. They have dual band VHF/UHF capability, VHF packet/APRS/Winlink plus HF using a Hustler 5 BTV and end-fed Zepp antennas. Final coax routing is needed for the HF antennas then testing will take place. Will look at checking into W8SGT nets. Also working with Athens County EMA to reset VHF/HF capabilities for the planned new EOC west of town. Last minute report from Gallia sub EC.

District 9
COSHOCTON CO: Main exercise was SET we had a good turn out with lots of knowledge learned. This year we set up a Station at the EOC as all antennas we removed for new roof. NCS was also set up that morning at the airport with high ground. We passed received lots of traffic Sat. Worked with OHDEN, w8sgt, 60m, OSSBN. Good job by all, with KC8PUW as exercise coordinator.  WX8OH continues to be active in various emergency nets, w8sgt net, OSSBN, SATERN net control station with 2 hurricane activations and 14 hours spent. NFLEN Hurricane Michael Recovery Activation 3.950/7.251 (Northern Florida Emergency Net) 13 Check-ins over two weeks providing relays by HF, Remote, Text and Emails. Monitored 16 hrs a day for 14 Days. EC: Steve Wheatcraft, AA8BN

GUERNSEY CO: Guernsey ARES participated in the annual SET on October 6th. The EOC was opened and manned. Contact with the state EOC (W8SGT) was established. Coshocton County provided us a gateway for the OHDEN. 24 messages consisting of simulated emergency, Priority, and Welfare were transmitted or received. Additionally, 60 meter operations of Black Swan was monitored and three bulletins received. Also, contact was made with Ohio government station and checked into the statewide net. There were a total of 12 ARES members participating for a total of 36 hours. ARES group assisted with the Byesville Halloween parade for a total of 14 hours. EC: Richard W Wayt, WD8SDH.

JEFFERSON CO: Spending in-person and on air time become more proficient with NBEMS/FLDIGI. EC: Robert M Carson Jr, N8CUX

WASHINGTON CO: Monitored some of the Black Swan stations and made contact on 60 meter with one of the government stations and 80 meter W8SGT. EC: Joseph Wigal, W8JTW.
DEC/9: Sad to report the loss of Morgan County EC Russell Wilson, KD8RW, Morgan Co , who passed away suddenly at the age of 48. DEC: Sonny Alfman, W8FHF.

District 10
SET was Oct 6, and 3 counties participated, with Medina and Lorain leading the way. FLDIGI Training in Elyria on Oct 21 was a big hit! Our district leadership meeting was well attended on Oct 27. Good plans and ideas were generated for 2019. Look for big things coming next year!

Cuyahoga County: We had a good turnout for the SET on October 6th with 23 members participating. This month's meeting featured a training on ARES Connect. October 20th we had to establish a severe weather net. We wound down our public service season with the American Cancer Society's 5K run.

Lake County: Twelve operators tracked the progress of 555 runners in the Northern Ohio Marathon and Half Marathon. The course started at Headlands Beach ST. PK. through the Village of Grand River, the cities of Mentor, Willoughby and back along the Lake Erie shoreline to the State Park. The eight hour event went well with no major issues. Eight ARES members attended a field trip to the N.W.S. office at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. A presentation and tour of the N.W.S. office was conducted by Service staff. Now for the fun stuff. Five members manned our Radio Room at the Lake county History Center for Trick or Treat night. A fun time was had handing out candy to all the little goblins, witches and super heroes.

Monthly Activity Report  September, 2018

District 1
Totals include Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net and District 1 Skywarn. The District 1 Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net for the month of September had 229 checkins, passed 129 pieces of traffic in 422 minutes in 30 sessions. This net meets 365 days a year on the 147.375 repeater in Oregon, OH. at 6:30pm. The repeater has a pl of 103.5. The District 1 NORC-2 Hospital team paid a visit to the Elizabeth Scott Community Center in Lucas County, to deliver radio equipment and perform a site survey in cooperation with the Hospital Council Of Northwest Ohio.

District 2
DCARES participated in the local Tribute to Towers 5k run by providing Em-comm at 10 checkpoints along the route. DCARES had a mutual asset with Williams Co. ARES for an interoperability drill at the Williams Co. fairgrounds. Learned a lot and found some things that we could improve on.

District 3

     Comments:  MCES ARES/RACES Net 145.23(-) held each Sunday evening at 2100hrs, 147.21 (+) held each Thursday at 2000hrs, Digital nets using MT63-2KL on 145.23 held each Sunday at 1900hrs & Wires X net on Sunday at 1800hrs. Held another Tech in a Day class with 19 students, 10 of those students walked away with a new FCC Technician license. COVERED BRIDGES ON THE AIR Event - We had a great time out at the Covered Bridges on the Air event, running two radios running – the ICOM 7300 that Icom America loaned to us, and Rich (KC8YTV) brought out his radio, as well. A total of 88 contacts were made across North America. The Club also supported the Tour de Donut Bike ride thru Miami County with 25 operators watching over 2700 bike riders.. 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY:  (86 members, 0 change):  3 weekly voice net sessions, 3 weekly digital net sessions (21 Net man-hours); 1 Public Service Events (85 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 3 other ARES related events (31 man-hours) for a total of 10 events and 117 man-hours. 
     Comments:  WinLink, An Introduction was our program topic at our MoCo ARES Meeting. This will be another tool in our EmComm tool box. Preparations are underway for the upcoming SET in October.

PREBLE COUNTY:  (14 members):  5 weekly net sessions (5 Net man-hours); 2 Public Service Event (178 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 2 other ARES events (10 man-hours) for a total of 9 events and 193 man-hours.
     Comments:  Skywarn activated for storm reporting. No damage to report. Preble participated in the OHIO QSO PARTY in the EOC category. New members were trained in HF operation, new antennas were tried and found to greatly reduce interference between stations. Training was conducted on proper installation of coax and connectors and testing. Portable 70' tower was deployed and new modifications were tested. Overall the event was very successful and all had fun. WE expect to take first place this year in the EOC category.

SHELBY COUNTY:  (39 members):  5 weekly net sessions; 2 digital net sessions (44 man-hours); 0 Public Service Event (0 man-hours); 1 Emergency Operations (1 man-hours); and 2 other ARES events (48 man-hours); for a total of 10 events and 93 man-hours.

There were no public service events during the month. We did host a District 5 ARES meeting on Sept 1st at our County EMA Office to provide training on the new ARES Connect System.

Licking County comments:, Had a busy month. Thanks to those who are working hard to get the Red Cross radio install completed, they should be finalizing the install early next month. The Search and Rescue exercise was canceled due to the wet ground conditions from the rain that has fallen and forecast for the day. A couple of our members attended the G775 class that was given in Newark at Newark PD, Thanks NPD for your hospitality. A CPR/AED class was set-up, Had a great turn out for the class and a special thanks to West Licking Fire District and West Licking Fire Marshall Fred Hughes for their hospitality and instructing the class, due to scheduling conflicts for some that wanted to attend, there will be another class scheduled after the first of the year. Looking forward to the rest of the year, with things starting to slow down a bit, it will be a good time to catch up on some on-line courses. EC: Bret Stemen KD8SCL

Franklin County Comments: Work has been underway to improve the antenna system at the FCEM&HS office since roof repairs were completed a few months ago. We had training on the Franklin County Siren Watch program where volunteers monitor the weekly operation of tornado sirens. As a result additional volunteers were recruited into the program. There are nearly 200 sirens in Franklin County with residents and FCOHARES monitoring sirens so that malfunctioning sirens can be repaired within a day. We also learned about the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Kitchens out of North Carolina with a video presentation. 30,000 meals a day can be prepared and served daily while also caring for the workers with hot showers. It is truly amazing to watch the transformation of a 40 foot semi-trailer into a giant food truck. These units are being deployed throughout the Florence flooded areas and serve the Red Cross, Salvation Army and Emergency Management.

Union County Comments: The new location for EMA station 720 is still slowly progressing. The County met with someone from the tower company after getting the ducks in a row from the township and county to put up a new tower. A soil sample has been taken where the tower location is going to be. That will help the tower manufacturer determine the design of the tower base and tower. The expectation is that the tower will be up in 3 to 4 months. The County EMA put on WEBEOC training this month. That was pretty interesting. We then made a visit to the hope center. The hope center is the volunteer management center and donation drop off location for an event. It was good to talk with the people from the Hope Center and to know where things would generally be setup in the building, especially if they would need comunication assistance from our ARES group. I am still working on convincing everyone to get signed up with ARES connect. October is a busy month, the SET is the first weekend, JOTA is the 3rd weekend in October. Some of the ARES members and club members are going to be at Camp Lazarus in Delaware for JOTA. Keep an ear out JOTA weekend for scouts on the air. Lawrence: Lawrence County ARES set up HF and VHF radios to do demonstrations of emergency communications for the Aid VFD Community Fun Day. We also hosted with the Lawrence County EMA a class in Damage Assessment for Individual Assistance. Both events were a big success.

Cuyahoga County: This month's meeting was at the Cuyahoga County EOC. Members have been
exploring ARES Connect with positive reactions.

Geauga County: Perry Drill with FEMA and Local serviced agencies. The Great Geauga County Fair were the events of September.

Lake County: The month started off with a fun event OSPOTA. 31 parks were contacted from Headlands Beach ST PK. No rain in NE Ohio . Down State sounded like it was wetter. On the 18th things got more serious with the Perry Nuke Power Plant FEMA evaluated drill. Lake, Ashtabula and
Geauga Co EOC's were on the air along with the State EOC. At the review meeting FEMA reported no finding. Back to more fun events like the Willoughby Hills FD Touch a Truck Display. Fire Trucks, Bomb disposal trucks other emergency equipment and our Comm Trailer were on display. The kids large and small had good time playing with the fire hose demonstration. Our Comm Trailer was on display and operating at the President Garfield Home free admission day.

Warren County: Aggressive recruiting underway, strong response, initial meeting scheduled to gauge interest and set realistic goals.

Hamilton County: Frequent EMA/EOC support, including VPOTUS visit. Butler County: Reported time includes Winlink activity, and observation of monthly siren testing. from the DEC: August was an unusual summer month in that no SkyWARN hours were logged in the district. 50 percent of the public service hours were allocated to bikeMS in Butler, Preble, Mongomery, Franklin (IN) and
Union (IN) Counties. Cincinnati SkyWARN will soon be officially DMR-active and monitoring 31394 during NWS call-ups.

District 5
Mahoning County - David Brett, KD8NZF See attached file describing activation of MC ARES for Damage Assessment.

Stark County - Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 4 public service nets for the month of August that totaled 96 check-ins. On Saturday, August 4th ARES with assistance from Summit Co ARES and multiple other radio clubs provided communications support for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Grand Parade. Over 35 volunteers provided 210 community service hours for this event that covered four major areas, Staging, Route Communications, Dispersal and Medical support.

Summit County - Ken Dorsey, KA8OAD This month we provided race communications for the Goodyear 1/2 Marathon and 10K run. We also had two volunteers assist Mahoning County ARES with disaster assessment after the recent round of neighborhood flooding.

Districts 6
CRAWFORD COUNTY OHIO A.R.E.S. One rider who has participated in several events each year for the last 8 years stated that "The Best 'Wurst' Bike Ride of 2018" was one of the most organized and efficient radio groups she had seen. Hats off to the hams who seceded in their mission to safeguard the bicycle riders over the courses of three bike routes. Jim Buck WD8LWE ran net control, ARES members Tom Schluter KD8UXS, Mike Shuster KE8CZU, and Mike Foght WB8MF, joined forces with Luke Banks KD8NCL, and Joshua Albright KE8GVI, as well as, Wyandot county hams Carl Miller KC8GZP, "Bud" Miller KB8SHZ and Matt Conley KD8GWK, filled various rotating stationary positions and/or roving assignments.

District 7
Licking County, We had another busy month and September is going to be busy as well. A big Thank You to the members Weldon K8NQ, Mike KD8DZ and Eldon W5UHQ for help with the relocation of the hospitals feedline and connections. We had several planning meetings for upcoming exercises and training. We also has several exercises this month, a Hazmat Decon exercise in conjunction with a 5K color run and EarthEx TTX. Looking forward to September's events.

Marion County, Another busy month with public service.

Union County, Work is progressing on the new EMA station. We got the green light to start setting up the radio room. The new tower is still expected to be put up sometime in October. This month has been not a busy as July. -Ed, KE8ANU

We participated in the 2018 EarthEx exercise along with the Franklin County Emergency Management & Homeland Security office. Lawrence: Great turn out for Covered Bridge Day. We set up three HF stations and had contacts also on 2 meter. All equipment set up and on the air in less than 30 minutes. No commercial power, just generators, batteries, and solar power. 14 Amateurs and a bunch folks from the public. We even inspired one to take his test at our next meeting and gained a new Ham!
Pike: Continuing work on EOC radio room. Installation of HF antenna next priority. Scioto: ARES Feurt Hill Tower Weather Station online at Davis 2.0 Weatherlink platform now. It is part of the CWOP and NOAA system now as well. Also successful Raffle Fundraiser held for new equipment.

District 9
COSHOCTON CO: Coshocton County ARES and Coshocton County Amateur Radio Association had a working display at the Gateway to Fall Festival in Newcomerstown. Radiograms were used and traffic was passed through OSSBN . Thanks KL7RF, KC8PUW, NF8U, KB8VIP , KC8SXL for helping organize, set up, operations and year down.

Guernsey Co ARES had a training exercise with Radiograms. KL7RF participated with other

GUERNSEY CO: The monthly training was a table top exercise. ARES members were tasked with developing a communication plan for the county during a severe weather incident. This included a large resource management center, three shelters, staging area, and the EOC. Members also received two radiograms over the air using the EOC radios. Thanks to Coshocton county ARES for assisting in the exercise by transmitting the radiograms. Still trying to use the ARES connect but running into some issues. Guernsey ARES manned a booth at the Salt Fork arts and crafts festival. We had a radio display/on air operation and answered several questions. EC: Richard W Wayt, WD8SDH

ARES monthly activity report for July, 2018

District 1

Totals include figures from the Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net and District 1 Skywarn. For the month of July the Northwest Ohio Traffic and Training Net had 232 check ins, took 127 pieces of traffic in 408 minutes in 31 sessions. Work continues in cooperation with the Hospital Council Of Northwest Ohio and the amateur radio installation project. A few of the medical facilities have finished the installation process and we have visited those facilities and tested the antenna and radio for operational status. We will continue working this project as requests for equipment keep coming in.

District 2

Stark County - Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 5 public service nets for the month of July that totaled 105 check-ins. We provided support communications for the Hall of Fame Community Parade on July 22nd with eleven volunteers participating. Packet Radio was again used to relay parade lineup details to the TV production truck. We continue to encourage our team members to register their training efforts in the new Ohio ARES Connect database.

Summit County - Ken Dorsey KA8OAD This month we helped with the Stow July 4th Parade. We assisted the parade officials keeping track of the parade lineup and along the route keeping the units in the parade moving at a reasonable pace.

District 7

MARION COUNTY: We provided our services to the Marion County Fair this year by monitoring the fair grandstands for each main event ensuring the safety, comfort and easy access of fair goers and participants. We also were a visible link between the public to law enforcement and medical services. Ironman 2018 was another success. We were able to assist Delaware County by covering the bicycle race through about 50 miles of Marion and Morrow Counties. We provided vital information about the riders and support staff to Delaware ARES which they relayed to race officials. Delaware ARES provided us will the information we needed to make this such a success.

UNION COUNTY: July 7th was the Central Ohio Challenge, a bike ride spanned from Dublin to Bellefontaine and back to make up the longest 100 mile loop. Bike riders started in Dublin at 7am and the last one made it back to Dublin around 5:30pm. The help for it was greatly appreciated. We had a total of 18 amateur radio operators help out with communications for the event from Franklin, Delaware, Union, and Licking counties, covering all 7 rest stop locations, the start/finish point in Dublin, and 3 mobile operators out on the bike course. We used the N8IG 2 meter repeater and the W8FTV 2 meter repeater in Bellefontaine to cover the course. I was also able to help operate the special event station for the Steam Threshers Show in Plain City. We got the antenna strung up in the trees at Pastime Park Friday evening and got everything ready for operating on Saturday July 14th. That was a lot of fun and also a good experience especially when after calling CQ getting a few stations responding at the same time with their call signs. It was also challenging hearing the radio when the tractors would drive by. We ended up making 100 contacts, the farthest one away was in Italy operating on 40 meters. Joe, K8JWL and myself helped out with the Trifit Challenge in Columbus on the 21st. That event went well. The intersection I was at had an Upper Arlington Police officer there to stop traffic while the bike riders went through it. The new location for EMA station 720 is still progressing. The tile and carpet were installed over this past week. The details are still being worked out for the new tower which is expected to be setup tentatively in October. I have been trying to get everyone to sign up on ARES Connect. I have been having a very limited success doing that. I would like to hear how everyone's experience has been getting ARES members signed up for it and using it to track everyone's time for all the training nets and other events I see listed on there. 73, -Ed, KE8ANU

DELAWARE COUNTY: Ironman ,as always, was a huge event and another success for DELARES since they will be coming back next year. One member of DELARES put in over 40 hours of planning, pre-event meetings, organizing and recruiting. Marion County was a huge asset and had 13 volunteers. we couldn\'t have done this without them. LICKING COUNTY: Licking County, Had a busy month, August and September is gearing up to be a busy months with planning for several exercises. Plans are also being made for CPR and AED training through one of the local Fire Departments. New EOC planning continues with some major changes and looking at moving the radio set up at the local hospital. Our thoughts and prayers go out to 2 members and their families for the loss of their XYL's.

FAYETTE COUNTY: assisted in security for July 3rd Fire in the Sky fireworks Display in Washington Court House.

FRANKLIN COUNTY: This month the FCEM&HS office presented the risks that Franklin County faces and how ARES fits into responding to water shortages, power outages, flooding, hazmat, earthquakes, cyber threats and more. We had a good turnout and learn quite a bit. We covered a July 4th parade and the annual OSU Ross Hospital Tri-Fit. In August the FBI has been invited to speak to us about hazards they deal with and things we may see when we provide communication at public service events.

Lake County: On July 4th we helped assemble and provide communications for the Fairport Harbor Mardi Gras Parade. This is a tough day to get volunteers to come out, with everyone having family events on the holiday. We did manage to get five operator to come out and got the job done. The next event was the Civil War Encampment at the James A. Garfield Home. We set up a Telegraph Demo just outside the telegraph office on the grounds. We use the Civil War telegraph sounders and keys. Those that stopped by were impressed.

Medina County: Twin Sizzler bike race on July four went off better than expected with no accidents and finishing just about on time. Usually we have stragglers that extend things about an hour.

ARES Monthly Activity Report – June, 2018

SEC

With Scott working on promoting the ARES Connect system. It’s good to see those already registering! Keep it up- Ohio is a large test for this system- our input will help make it work for all.  I have been working with Richard KD8PHG on the Sarge’s facilities- we’re mainly concerned with antennas. We are also in discussion with the state about RACES Sarge is technically a RACES station, etc.  I agree with the FEMA motion toward gathering ~all~ volunteer communications modes under an “Auxcomm” umbrella. It doesn’t matter as much which hat we wear, as long as amateur radio is involved and vital as it always has been.  If you know my “Canned Ham” story, you’ll understand that I’m really interested in several communication trailer projects going on around the state. Marion, Medina and others are creating vehicles which will be useful for event coverage and Field Day, but will also be vital if/when there is a larger-scale emergency requiring our communication abilities. Well done to you all!

Your ASEC’s have been busy- Matt KD8TTE is working on Black Swan 2018. We are in discussion about staging our own 300/400/Auxcomm courses. We have had a qualified instructor volunteer, if we can find the space and time. What a great opportunity that would be!  Mark KD8YMN has been working closely with his counties where new EC’s have been appointed. Mark is good at relationship building with agency directors.

We all appreciate your time and energy! Just in June our people put in nearly 12,000 hours…think of that!  Thank you all- I’m guessing you all found that time to be fun, and worthwhile.

The District 1 Traffic and Training Net had 253 checkins, handled 134 pieces of traffic in 455 minutes in 30 sessions. The District 1 DEC and both ADEC;s and EC’s made numerous hospital and non-hospital site visits for inspections to place amateur radio equipment in these facilities with the assistance of the Hospital Council Of Northwest Ohio who is providing the equipment through grants.

Wyandot County-EC Ron Wilch KE8PX  The Wyandot County Hams prepared and completed Field Day at Wharton Community Park this year. We worked hard but had a great time. We only got 4 contacts on one of our stations and we worked on it all weekend. Finally we found that the vertical antenna being used had a bad coil and could only be used on 10 meters. Quite a learning experience. The other two radios worked great! We had a pot luck cook out which everyone enjoyed. We also had our monthly meeting and monthly emergency siren test net. A good month for Amateur Radio!

Comments:  MCES ARES/RACES Net 145.23(-) held each Sunday evening at 2100hrs, 147.21 (+) held each Thursday at 2000hrs, Digital nets using MT63-2KL on 145.23 held each Sunday at 1900hrs & Wires X net on Sunday at 1800hrs. The club supported several events during June resulting in a busy month, starting off with bike rides covering two different during the Troy Strawberry festival with 20 operators, Field Day operation was well supported with several members making their first HF contacts and several non-ham making their first HF contacts under the guidance of a license operators. The West Milton Triathlon on the 16 of June was supported with 17 operators. To round out the month, the club held another 1 day Tech training class resulting in 7 students taking the test, with 6 passing. Three additional hams attempted to upgrade their license, resulting two upgrading to General and one attempting to gain Extra, but not passing.

Comments:  MoCo ARES held its Community Meeting on June 26th. Jack Gerbs, WB8SCT did a presentation on Digital Mobile Radio. Still trying to get all MoCo ARES members to complete their profile in ARES Connect.

PREBLE COUNTY:  (16 members):  4 weekly net sessions (8 Net man-hours); 0 Public Service Event (0 man-hours); 3 Emergency Operations (10 man-hours); and 5 other ARES events (490 man-hours) for a total of 12 events and 508 man-hours.

Comments:  PrebleARES participated in field day as class 2F. We had 12 operators for the period. New HF antenna for the county EMA office was installed and tested with great success. This antenna was a replacement from Black Swan test that was so disappointing. SSB, CW and GOTA antenna were installed. Some in band and out of band, close proximity interference was noticed. Use of homebrew shorting stubs and bandpass filters minimized most of the interference. New plans were made to minimize interference in future field days. The clubs 70’ portable crank up tower was deployed with a tri band yagi installed. Certainly made a difference on the higher bands. The GOTA station was a real hit this year. Newer hams and less experienced hams made many contacts, more so than any other year records show. This years field day was to promote training and operation rather than points. The K8YR repeater transmitter power output upgrade continued. Additional testing of equipment required purchase of a new higher capacity power supply and other equipment. This was purchased to be installed at a later date. Skywarn was activated several times for storm watches. No severe weather related problems noted. Several members assisted in the modification and installation of parts on the portable 70’ tower. The equipment box was professionally painted and looks really nice. We note the passing of long time ARES member Don Foreman, AB8OS. He was active with the group and was very inventive on projects and a valued CW operator for field day. We will miss him greatly.
 

SHELBY COUNTY:  (39 members):  4 weekly net sessions; 2 digital net sessions (43 man-hours); 0 Public Service Event (0 man-hours); 0 Emergency Operations (0 man-hours); and 1 other ARES events (322 man-hours); for a total of 7 events and 365 man-hours.

Comments:  4 SCARES Sunday Nets, 2 Digital Nets (1 MT63-2KL, 1 C4FM), June 23 Field Day June 24 Field Day and SCARES Meeting.

DISTRICT 3 ACTIVITIES:  4 District 3 ARES weekly voice net sessions (24 Net man-hours); and 0 other District 3 activities for a total of 4 events and 24 man-hours.

District 4

E-ops time was to support the National Weather Service office in Wilmington. Highland County EC Harley Maines (K8HM) continues to be active with MARS. Much time committed to Field Day operations in several counties.

Butler County: Monthly meetings are suspended due to construction at the school where we meet. We have established a VHF AIRMAIL node with traffic averages of 2 users per day every day. There are a total of 6 call signs that normally pass traffic through the AIRMAIL node, including the Hamilton County Regional Operations Center of the Emergency Management Agency. 

District 5

District 5 EC Dennis Conklin, AI8P visited 13 Field Day sites within or immediately adjacent to the District 5 Counties. These included Portage County ARS (K8BF), Mahoning Valley ARA (W8QLY), 20/9 Club (K8KTA), Lisbon ARA (K8GQB), Triangle ARC (K8BLP), Alliance ARC (W8AL), Tusco ARC (W8ZX), Massillon ARC (W8NP), Cuyahoga Falls ARC (W8VPV), Northern Ohio DX (W8DXA), Silvercreek ARA (W8WKY), and Medina 2M group (W8EOC) Stark County - Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 4 public service nets for the month of June that totaled 101 check-ins. There we no public service events this month but 10 ARES members participated in Field Day operating with the Massillon Amateur Radio Club. We have completed registration with the new ARES Connect system and are encouraging our members to populate the database. This is expected to take several months to complete.

MARION COUNTY: At the beginning of the month we provided radio communications for the Hot Tamale bike riders. They had 300+ riders and covered 8, 16, 32, and 64 mile route throughout Marion County. We provided the organizers with information such as if riders needed assistance and location of riders. Field Day was another success! Still working on total numbers. We continue to organize our newly acquired ARES trailer.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY: Successful: GOBA, Field Day, Fire Alarm installation and testing.

FAYEYYE COUNTY: Activated the Fayette County EOC for Field Day Mark Griggs KB8YMN participated in the EMA/LEPC meeting in my absence.

FRANKLIN COUNTY: This month the Franklin County Coroner's Office provided training on operations and how ARES supports their mission in mass casualty events. We had an opportunity to review 7 cases to decide the cause of death. Next month Franklin County EMA will be discussing the integration of public & private resources during an emergency and how ARES is impacted.

DELAWARE COUNTY: Field day bought out a very large turnout as it normally does for Delaware county.

LICKING COUNTY: We had a busy month with GOBA, Field Day, Pataskala Fireworks to name a few. A big Thank you to the GOBA hams as they were professional on our repeater and I had received several comments from local ARES members and hams about their professionalism. Thank you to those that were willing and able to take the time for the long hours for Field Day, we had 3 clubs operating in various parts of the county and the EC Bret KD8SCL was able to visit 2 of the FD sites. Licking County LEPC held a Tabletop Exercise which involved a ruptured pipeline that runs through the county and about an hour later an auto accident involving an over turned tanker truck carrying chlorine which also ruptured in the same area of the pipeline rupture . It was interesting to see how the various agencies would respond to and handle both accidents.

UNION COUNTY: We had some public service activity this month. I ( Ed, KE8ANU) helped out with the Hot Tamale Bike Ride in Waldo on June 2nd.The time for that did not get included in this report since I assume the Marion County ARES group will have it in their report. A big thank you goes out to the following for helping out with GOBA. Gayle, W8KWG helped out with net control on the Marysville Repeater for GOBA on Fathers Day. John, K8LVZ and also Stan, N8BHL were available as back up net control operators monitoring the repeater and filling in when needed. I also put some time into getting ready for the Central Ohio Challenge July 7th. That bike ride goes from Dublin to Bellefontaine and back and has 4 loops, a 30 mile loop, 55 mile loop, 80 mile loop, and a 100 mile loop. It starts in Franklin County, goes through Union County, part of Madison County by Plain City, part of Champaign County, and in to Logan County. We are fortunate to have 2 repeaters that can cover that large of an area to use, the Marysville N8IG 145.35 repeater sponsored by the Union County EMA and the W8FTV 147.000 repeater that the Champaign Logan Amateur Radio Club operates. I also have permission to use the Urbana WB8UCD repeater in Champaign County/Urbana as a back up if needed. It has good coverage around the middle part of the bike ride route. We had a great Field Day with the Union County Amateur Radio Club. We had around 40 people sign in for field day total, including club members, visitors, and en elected official. We also had quite a few youth participate on the GOTA station. We attempted to make a satellite contact but we were unsuccessful. Tony, KC8PZ participated on the Ohio Single Side band HF traffic net on Sunday from Field Day. He relayed several radio grams to others that were on the net as well as passed a radiogram to our Section Manager. Attached are a few of pictures from Field Day.

KNOX COUNTY: We had a very successful Field Day. As usual it rained. 

District 8

Counties reporting: Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto. EC comments:

Athens: Athens County ARA operated Field Day from Athens County Fairgrounds. Sunday Creek ARF joined with the rejuvenated Morgan County club on a ridge in Morgan County. DEC Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ and YL Jan Slattery, KD8PUJ provided week-long communications support and net control for the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure in central Ohio. After GOBA N8SUZ operated made some phone contacts from the ACARA FD site. Red Cross Disaster Program Specialist Dave Bradley visited both sites. ACARA obtained FD proclamations from the Athens City Mayor who opened FD by reading his proclamation and from the Athens County Commissioners.

Gallia: We were held a station building exercise at the friday Field Day setup for MOVARC. Where they acted as a group to construct a station out of debris. Hocking: HVARC assisted with setup of the Washboard Festival parade on June16th. HVARC once again held our field day at the home of Ray KB8GUN and Mary KC8GUN Webb in southern Hocking County. We had a good turn out with 19 operators in and out during the contest and many other family members as well. We utilized the emergency response trailer and a couple of HF rigs in the old barn. It was a great time with several lessons learned.

Ross: Two hams (KD8UND and K9RIA) participated in week-long communications for the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure Scioto: 5 Operators with over 60 hours for Field Days Event 

District 9

COSHOCTON CO: Field day was the big event with 18 ARES members over the 2 days. We sent out our messages from field day via voice and fldigi. The county OTS was KL7RF sending them on to SM,SEC, DEC, surrounding county ECs, etc.....aa8bn Coshocton County EC

GUERNSEY CO: The monthly training session covered how to be a NCS and 10 quiz covering various ARES subjects. ARES members participated in field day with 14 ARES members and 13 other amateur operators over two days operating four stations as 4A, modes CW, SSB, PSK31, & FT8. This resulted in 187 man hours for the event. Three messages for field day were sent via two meters

MORGAN CO: We had a great turn out for Field Day this year, including our local EMA Director and the regional Red Cross Disaster Services person.

District 10: I hope you all had as much fun at Field Day as I did! Lots of public service events coming up. They're not only good practice for field operations, they\'re big fun too!

Cuyahoga County: Members participated at numerous Field Day sites.

Geauga County: This includes Field Day.

Lake County: Sunday in June Bike Started off wet and rainy and remained that way on and off all day. There were no major issues and all 385 riders returned to the barn safe sound. Field Day started off with heavy shower in the morning here in the northeast. It cleared up in the afternoon making the rest of FD a very enjoyable operation.

Lorain County: No comments submitted.

Medina County: The EOC radio trailer is now operational on vhf/uhf and has one EOC radio. Work to be done is to add an hf radio and a TV that can be used as a display.
