District 4
E-ops time was SkyWARN
support in Cincinnati and Wilmington. (And the count is already rolling up for
April.) Hamilton County ops are putting in time to prepare for an LEPC-driven
MCI drill in May. Public Service event season is here, and we expect to report
large numbers over the next few months.
District 5
Ken Dorsey, KA8OAD, for
Summit County: This month, in place of our regular meeting, I asked that all
members attend the Skywarn training session presented by the Summit County EMA
on the same week as or normal meeting.
Don Kemp, NN8B, for
Columbiana County: Members attended SKYWARN training in Lisbon, OH.
Terry Russ, N8ATZ, for Stark
County: Stark County ARES completed 4 public service training nets for the
month of March that totaled 132 check-ins. There were no public service events
during the month. In conjunction with Severe Weather Awareness Week together
with our county EMA office sponsored our annual Severe Storms Spotter training
held at Jackson High School. This years training saw over 100 in attendance
with most new spotters.
District 6
Crawford county Very busy
first month (partial) starting with SkyWarn training. Making contacts with
local officials and reacquainting with old friends who have moved into new
positions. My first full scale HazMat exercise, seven FEMA courses, meetings with
members of two potential clubs in the county, Contacted sponsors of future
scheduled events to see if we can help, had a brief conference with Tim Flock
the EMA coordinator for the county published numerous photos of exercise on my
web site for use by agencies and members. Photo Links currently available:
http:/www./mikeyned.com/ema/ http://www.mikeyned.com/ares2017/ Not bed for a
running start.
Richland County ARES had 2
skywarn nets 1 skywarn training,EMA siren testing assist for possible sirens
not working Richland ARES had a tabletop drill with EMA Some areas learned that
we can assist with communications during a emergency event.
District 7
DELAWARE: DELARES was called
into an exercise at the EMA to provide comms for the Red Cross in a simulated
emergency. All activity was within the EOC. We had received an earlier notice
that something was being planned but heard no more. Then, as the event email
was coming in the EC got a call to come in and help. As I was getting ready to
go it occurred to me this is how it works in a real emergency. No time to plan
and prepare, just go and do your job. It was a good wake up call and revealed a
weakness in our ability to notify other ARES members of a need for action.
Email is too slow (the above message took a day to arrive) phones may not be
reliable and few people monitor the repeaters during the day. Something to work
on in case its a real emergency.
KNOX: Four nets with a total
of 56 check-ins Knox County ARES Leadership Team is applying ICS to Field Day
Frank Counts and Pat Valentino promoted amateur radio at the Knox Count
Exchange Club. Franks Counts and Pat Valentino participated in a round table
discussion with county 9-1-1 Supervisor on integrating amateur radio with 9-1-1
in times of emergency.
LICKING: Licking County Had
a busy month, several of us helped Franklin Co. at the Arnold Expo, 3 members
are going through the 8 week CERT class which will be wrapping up in April. EOC
remodel is moving along, hoping to have it completed and operational soon. We activated
the weather net for the statewide tornado drill and had 16 members check-in and
gave reports on alerts and sirens. 2 Severe weather nets were activated and we
had a total of 38 check-ins. April is going to be a busy month as well. Looking
forward to the ARES conference.
MARION: We had a fairly busy
end to the month of March 2017. In addition to our normal activities we had
several members attend a training session for the county Emergency Operations
Center, in preparation for a functional exercise hosted by the county EMA. We
did participate in the exercise along with several agencies from Marion, Morrow
and Delaware counties. This allowed us to practice and workout any difficulties
of setting up and conducting traffic via FLDIGI at remote locations such as a
shelter the hospital and the emergency operating center. It went well and we
identified a few areas that we can improve upon.
UNION: We have a weekly net
on the N8IG repeater. If there is enough interest for a simplex net, we have
one after the net on the repeater. This month we had a 2 meter simplex net that
also included the use an echolink simplex node.
