Ohio ARES was activated for two situations in September. Units in and around Hamilton County (Cincinnati) were dispatched to check Ohio River tributaries for algae plumes that threatened the heavily attended "Riverfest". Licking County ARES and CERT were activated to assist with searching for a missing college student. He was found deceased on campus. Many county units were active in large public events.

Hey everyone!  Big sigh of relief!  Our big stuff for the fall is winding down.

Thanks so much those of you who participated in the SET October 3. Somebody shut off the bands, but we fumbled through. We are already planning a work day at The Sarge to finish the install of the Delta Loop antenna. Admittedly we were having trouble and most of that was obviously antenna.  Remember one of the purposes of SET is to identify weaknesses and take action. The Sarge was busier than it had ever been- lots of voice traffic, and a huge digital presence! Thanks to Gary NJ8BB and Eldon, W5UHQ for making OHDEN a big part of Ohio ARES! We had checkins from at least 40 counties – a respectable figure!  NOW:  EC’s REMEMBER TO FILE YOUR FORM A REPORTS!!  WE NEED EVERY COUNTY THAT DOES AN SET (whether October 3 or another date) TO FILE YOUR PAPERWORK!!

Thanks to 20 on the ARES management team who took an entire day to enjoy our first Ohio ARES EC Training Day!  Hope you took a lot of stuff back home to incorporate. For the rest, old or new EC, DEC, AEC, we will hold this class again- we think it will be worth your while! And thanks to the crew at The Sarge for clearing a tour of the Ohio EOC and The Sarge.

Our new efforts to appreciate work by the Official Emergency Stations (OES) in Ohio has produced some nice numbers the first time around. Special thanks to those who filled out the on-line form! As you can see, there are some pretty big numbers here:

There is a major MARS exercise coming up November 7-10, in which they would like to contact as many counties as possible. We’re working out details, but put this on your calendars! More info asap.

Gang, please take the time each month to fill out a county report – (and DEC’s complete yours!!) the numbers we generate are compiled on a nationwide basis to let congress and the FCC know how much amateur radio serves our communities! It’s important – and your responsibility as part of the job.

We had at least two real activations in September! Great work!

District 5
Columbiana County provided Communication for 5K fun run at the Johnny Appleseed festival race. This month was busy for Summit County. We assisted the Cuyahoga Falls Amateur Radio Club with a table presenting Amateur Radio to visitors attending the Akron Maker Fair. We spoke with many young people and had many amateur radio exhibits to show them the amateur radio hobby. The following weekend was our major event, The Akron Marathon, and once again we had an amateur radio operator stationed at almost every mile marker, on each medical aid vehicle, the SAG vehicle, the main medical tent and two operators in the GIC (General Information Center) or nerve center of the race on net control and communications to the medical tent for a total of 25 operators this year. This year nearly 14,000 runners participated in the event, in the attached pictures you can see what it looks like to have nearly 14,000 people packed into the outfield of our local minor league baseball team stadium. As usual we needed about 30 volunteers to help with this large event and we received mutual aid from many counties including Stark, Medina and Cuyahoga. The aid they provided was invaluable and always appreciated. We also had APRS trackers on the Aid vehicles and SAG vehicle which allowed us to know where all our resources were at any time during the event. The EMA officials, Fire and Police officials that were with us in the GIC were all very impressed with this ability. The next day after the Marathon we provided communications and support for the Akron American Diabetes Association (ADA) Walk which made for a busy weekend. Stark Co ARES completed 5 public service nets for the month of September that totaled 142 check ins. Two members assisted the Summit Co ARES with the Annual Akron Marathon. It is anticipated that Stark ARES will have a display at the Massillon Hamfest in October. Complete details of all our ARES Activity is noted on our website at http://www.wd8aye.net

I was called to attend a briefing for a missing student at Dennison University and ended being deployed and was assessing the situation before I put a call out to other ARES members. The student was found a short time later deceased. Work on the CERT / ARES trailer continues. October looks to be a busy month with up coming events. Work continues on planning and equipping the ARES EOC in the county 911 Call Center. November is target date to begin training by the Sheriff\'s Office. District 10: September was another busy month.
Ashtabula County: September seemed to fly by with only three full weeks between our last report and this. One less net and the addition of our SET drill. It was all over in the blink of an eye! Here's to hoping October will go a bit slower- at a pace we can all enjoy!

Cuyahoga County: The Cleveland Hopkins Airport Drill was a large and intense deployment. Much was learned. Our Amateur Radio skills proved to be important -- had there been a real disaster they would have been crucial.

Geauga County: Worked the Great Geauga County Fair (5 days) and helped the not so mobile people to the gates (or inside the Fairgrounds to the location they wanted) using golf cars provided by the Fair Board.

Lake County: Lake County operated two stations out of Headlands ST PK for OSPOTA on a very rainy Saturday. Our Comm Trailer provide a dry location for one and my personal RV for the other. Operations terminate at 17:00Hrs. We worked all corners of the state plus central Ohio. Four Indiana State Parks were also contacted. All park contacts were on 40M.

Lorain County: No Comments.

Medina County: No Report Received.
