Ohio ARES Monthly Report for May, 2017
District 1
Bob Heim is retiring as the EC for
Erie County. I want to thank Bob for all his years he has dedicated to ARES and
amateur radio. He has been a great asset to Erie County and I know he will stay
in the group as an AEC. I would also like to congratulate Edward Andres W8EJA
on his appointment as the new EC for Erie County. I look forward to working
with Edward as he takes over the reigns of EC. (From Brent, and I join him in
giving thanks to Bob!)

Eight of
Nine Counties reporting: 290 Members

Hamvention (3 Days) Booth & Mesh Mini Training Sessions, MVMA Mesh
vulnerability analysis, GCARES/MVMA Winlink Gateway installation, testing &
training and several GCARES served agency open houses for a total of 39 events
and 271 man-hours.
LOGAN
COUNTY (RACES UNIT): 4 weekly voice net
sessions and 1 training session for a total of 5 events and 10 man-hours.
MIAMI
COUNTY: 8 weekly voice net sessions, 4
weekly digital net sessions, 1 Skywarn emergency operation with three (3) EF1
tornadoes touching down within Miami County and 12 other ARES/RACES events for
a total of 25 events and 139 man-hours.
MONTGOMERY
COUNTY: 5 weekly voice nets and 4 weekly
digital nets for a total of 9 events and 28 man-hours.
PREBLE
COUNTY: 4 weekly voice net sessions, 4
ARES events and 3 Skywarn emergency operations for a total of 11 events and 12
man-hours.
SHELBY
COUNTY: 4 weekly net sessions, 1 Public
Service event and 1 Skywarn emergency operation for tornado warning in adjacent
Miami County for a total of 6 events and 270 man-hours. SCARES also participated in Hamvention Emcomm
Vehicles Display for 3 Days.
DISTRICT 3 ACTIVITIES: 5 District 3 ARES weekly voice net sessions for a total of 5 events and 27 man-hours.

District 4
A busy month in District 4. On the scheduled side of things was
the Flying Pig Marathon weekend accounting for well over 300 man-hours. On the
unscheduled side was National Weather Service support (Clinton County), a
Hamilton County police \MDT" breakdown, Taste of Cincinnati, and a
high-profile retrial. The DEC hopes to make it to as many Field Day sites as
possible within 24 hours (less a nap).
District 5
Stark County EC Terry Russ N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 5
public service training nets for the month of May that totaled 146 check-ins.
There were no public service events during the month. Preparations are in full
swing for this year’s Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival in late July and
August. Communications coordinators are busy looking for volunteers to once
again assist with this important community event.

DELAWARE: Things ramped up quickly as we head into summer with
three events & exercises this month alone. More to come in June and July.
KNOX: 4 ARES nets with a total of 47 contact Net control Tom Evans

LICKING: We had a busy month. We ended the month with a LEPC full
scale exercise and had members at the EOC, Hospital, Red Cross Shelter and on
the scene. A big thank you to Alan KD8TNS for coordinating the members. Thanks
to the other members that helped out at the other locations as well. If it wasn't
for our volunteers, our services would not be possible.
MARION: We were asked to provide aerial video of the Active
shooter exercise at River Valley High School on May 10th. Thanks to Doug Denzer
KD8RGV for his time and use of his drone. He filmed the entire event using his
personnel drone and the coordinator of the exercise was very pleased with the
footage taken. Along with that we were asked to be there as observers to
provide feedback. This gave us the opportunity to get to know quite a few
potential agencies that we may be of assistance to in the future. If fact the
school is planning a total communication failure exercise and asked if we could
provide communications during this exercise. We have been busy planning and
preparing for the Hot Tamale Bike Ride in which we provide communication
throughout the route and inform organizers with accurate accountability of
riders and safety to riders. This will be held on June 3rd in Waldo. Thanks to
W8MLL and KD8UUB for filling key positions of people who are not going to be
able to attend. We had paramedics from the First Consolidated Fire Department
train several of us on first aid, CPR and defibrillators this month. We will
set up a follow up session to certify these people.
UNION: Some of the members went to Xenia for Dayton Hamvention.
The Union County Amateur Radio Club and some of the ARES members with Arlin's
help got a DMR repeater setup an operating at EMA Station 720 in Marysville. We
need to get into the habit of checking into the Ohio state wide DMR net on Wed
nights, which is when the weekly EMA meetings are. I did talk with Tony, KC8PZ
about traffic handling and he can give us some instruction about using the
radiogram and he also said he could be a NTS Liaison for our net if we decide
to allow traffic to be passed on it. I will bring that up at the next Union
County Amateur Radio Club Meeting for discussion
District 8
Counties reporting: Athens, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike,
Ross, Scioto, Vinton EC comments: Athens: Provided support for the Lake Hope
Bicycle Race sponsored by the Ohio University Cycling Club on Sunday, May 7.
Athens County full scale LEPC drill on Saturday, June 10, Hocking College,
Nelsonville. Field Day for ACARA at Athens County Fairgrounds and for SCARF at
Burr Oak Lake campgrounds.
Hocking: HVARC once again
participated in the Hocking County Mock Disaster held on May 6th. This year was
a full scale exercise on the Hocking County Fairgrounds and Keynes Mill located
on Front Street in Logan. We had 6 operators who participated for the full four
hours. Although it is not yet complete we were able to utilize our new ECom
trailer which we located at the alternate EOC on the fairgrounds. It was a
great exercise and we thank all of the Public Service agencies and the Hocking
County EMA for including us in the exercise.
Lawrence: Busy month!
Pike: Helped provide radio communications for Southern Ohio Forest
Rally (SOFR) at Zaleski State Forest and Scioto Trails State Park Scioto:
Participated in Countywide EMA Exercise May 23 linking EOC to Haz Mat Command
Site; Hospital Emergency Room and Red Cross Mock Shelter.
DEC comments: DEC will be conducting hybrid online/classroom
classes for the first two NIMS courses at Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio, 100
South May Avenue, Athens, OH for Athens and surrounding county ARES members.
IS-100 will be Monday, June 26 from 7 to 10 PM and IS-200 will be Monday, July
10 from 7 to 10 PM. Bring your own laptop with wireless network card if you
have one.
District 9
Ohio ARES is thrilled to announce that Sonny Alfman, W8FHF, has
agreed to return to his position as DEC for District 9! Sonny will be looking for volunteers to step
into some missing EC positions, and will be concentrating on breaking down
barriers for a wider partnership within amateur radio. Scott and I both are so
appreciative that Sonny has returned!
District 10
The ultimate ARES exercise is coming…Field Day! Don\'t miss out on
the fun that is Field Day!
Ashtabula County: No comments.
Cuyahoga County: We were activated by Cleveland OEM and completed
a very successful Cleveland Marathon as well as several other walks and runs.
We also assisted with several Skywarn nets for severe weather events.
Geauga County: No Comments.
Lake County: No comments.
Lorain County: No Comments.
Medina County: Shares net from EOC as usual each month.
