Ohio ARES report January 2017

District 1

The Northwest Ohio ARES Traffic Net for January, had 207 check ins, passed 106 pieces of traffic in 415 minutes in 31 sessions. Many Counties are cleaning up their roster and deleting non-participating members.

District 2

DISTRICT 3 SUMMARY:  100% of Nine Counties reporting:  284 Members (4 New), 105 Total Events (64 Voice Net Sessions, 13 Digital Net Sessions, 27 Meetings/ Drills/Tests/Training, 0 Public Service Events, 1 Emergency Operations), 105 Total Events for 678 Total Man-Hours.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY:  Four weekly voice net sessions and one ARES event for a total of 5 events and 8 man-hours.

CLARK COUNTY:  Four weekly net sessions and two ARES events for a total of 6 events and 36 man-hours.  

DARKE COUNTY:  Five weekly voice net sessions and one other ARES event for a total of 6 events and 22 man-hours.

GREENE COUNTY:  Five  GCARES weekly voice nets, five GCARES weekly digital nets, five GCARES weekly Mesh Discussion nets, five Bellbrook support group voice nets and five Fairborn support group voice nets and 4 other ARES meetings and related events for a total of 29 events and 123 man-hours.

LOGAN COUNTY (RACES UNIT):  Four weekly voice net sessions for a total of 4 events and 2 man-hours.

MIAMI COUNTY:  Nine weekly voice net sessions, three weekly digital net sessions and nine other ARES events for a total of 21 events and 72 man-hours.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY:  Five weekly voice nets, five weekly digital nets and three other ARES events for a total of 13 events and 63 man-hours.

PREBLE COUNTY:  Four weekly voice net sessions and one other ARES events for a total of 5 events and 6 man-hours.

SHELBY COUNTY:  Five weekly net sessions, one emergency event (severe weather net) and four other ARES events (ARES meeting, Ohio VHF Contest, Winter Field Day and VE Test Session) for a total of 10 events and 276 man-hours. 

DISTRICT 3 ACTIVITIES:  Four District 3 ARES Weekly Net sessions and one other ARES event (DEC and two ADEC’s attended Ohio Leadership meeting 29 January) for a total of 5 events and 52 man-hours.

District 4

Hamilton County: Comments: ARES Members meeting, ARES Core members meeting. Started informal Winlink net. Represented ARES at several club meeting and nets. Simplex contest. Winter Field Day. Health POD exercises. Digital workshop. Survey City of Wyoming building for ham radio install scheduled for this spring. Lots of administrative hours submitted. from the DEC: The winter doldrums are here and that\'s reflected in the Public Service numbers, although Butler County logged an event and associated hours.

District 5

Stark County EC, Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark Co ARES completed 5 public service training nets for the month of January that totaled 167 check-ins, a 3% increase over previous months. There were no public service events during January. We are currently promoting an ICS-100 training class that will be sponsored by our county EMA office. It is scheduled for February 15th. If well attended, EMA is looking at offering training for additional ICS certifications, IC200, 700 and 800.

DELAWARE--- Beginning of the new year and time to plan what events to cover without wearing out the group with non-emergency activities. Looking forward to some training that is compatible with ARES needs as well as everyday uses and on air operating.

MADISON--- Met with Stan Broadway, Don Kovalchik and Roger Roberts (Madison EMA Director) on 1/31 to discuss ways to bring this ARES group back up to speed. Here\\\'s hoping for a new dawn on the Madison County ARES group. 

MARION--- January - 2017 2017 was brought in with help from some of the ARES crew. They erected the portable communications tower in downtown Marion and lowered a lighted ball from the top to the countdown of the assembled crowd celebrating the New Year. The use of the tower for lowering the ball began four years ago and has now become a local tradition. The Chamber and Downtown Marion organization sponsor the event which draws several hundred folks downtown to welcome in the New Year and is always good PR for the ham radio community. Final touches were made to the 911 Dispatch Center station and training sessions will begin soon on its operation. January’s highlight was the commissioning of two additional Special Deputies from the ARES group. KD8KCH, Jim Bird and KE8ECT, Bill Tromm were sworn in along with about a dozen new Sheriff Deputies and Dispatchers by Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey. The ceremony was held at the new 911 Dispatch center in the county administration building and their addition brings to twenty the total number of Special Deputies for the ARES group. Sheriff Bailey also inspected the ARES communication station and stated it looked great and was happy the ARES would be part of the Dispatch Center team. 

District 8

Athens, Gallia,Hocking, Lawrence, Pike, Ross EC comments: 

Athens: ACARA/SCARF VE team will have a test session on Monday, March 13, 2017, 7:00 PM, at Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio, 100 South May Avenue, Athens, OH 45701 Red Cross of Southeastern Ohio will observe their 100th anniversary with an open house on Thursday, March 2. DEC Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ will be recognized as the longest continually serving volunteer with 43 years of service in safety, communications/technology and disaster services. 

Pike: DMR net will start Feb 12th, TG-313953. All hams are welcome. Working to initiate 6m net with existing 6m fm repeater, freq. 53.230 - 1 mhz.. 

Ross: Slow month DEC comments. DEC Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ is to present on \"Amateur Radio in the Classroom" and newer technologies at the Ohio Educational Technology Conference at the Columbus Convention Center on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, 8:00 AM.

District 9

Coshocton: Around 9 of us participated in the ARES event. Worked the station at the EOC and sheriff Dept. , Lepc meeting attended. 

Guernsey: The EC, WD8SDH and two AEC, KC8SBB / N8JMK attended the county table top exercise at the local EMA. The monthly training consisted of "solving ares problems". Members were presented with common "ares problems" and ask to solve them. Some of the problems were; accomplish a radiogram, set up a two freq, 4 station with tactical calls, resource net, and plot 3 know azimuths on a map to locate a possible location of a lost hiker.

District 10: Don't forget statewide ARES conference coming up on Saturday, April 1, 2017! NVIS day will be Saturday, April 22, 2017! Big fun coming, don't miss out!

from the DEC: Winding up another year in our very heterogeneous district. Santa brought me a cheap DMR HT so I've been listening to "3139" to see what's happening around the section.

Columbia County Gary Amato, KB8HTU As of midnight tonight 3 Jan 2017 I resign as EC of Columbiana county.
Stark County, Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 5 public service nets for the month of December that totaled 117 check-ins. There were no public service activities or events during the month. Six ARES registration applications were received from the Canton ARC that are being processed. During the month our ARES membership roster will be reviewed to add new registrations and drop expired members. Plans are already underway to schedule 2017 Skywarn Spotter training in March and our county EMA office has indicated that they will sponsor both ICS and Ohio MARCS System training for all amateurs interested in upgrading their training skills. This should take place in February.

LICKING COUNTY--- Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. I wish everyone the very best in 2017! We are looking forward to a great 2017 in Licking Co. A special “Thank you” to Sean Grady & John Weiber of the Licking Co. EMA for the special invitation to the EMAO Conference and to Weldon K8NQ for covering Bret KD8SCL in his absence at the conference. The Amateur Radio 101 presentation was well received by the EMA Directors. Work is slow but continues at the EOC. ---
MARION COUNTY--- 2016 December was a quiet month for the Marion ARES crew so we all enjoyed the Christmas and New Years Holiday with friends and family. The major public service event was providing security for the Christmas Light Show at the Marion Fairgrounds. This is a major event we participate in every year in conjunction with the Fair Board which runs nightly from Thanksgiving to Christmas night. We have a Clubhouse and EOC in a building on the grounds provided by the Fair Board, and this is one of the ways we pay our “rent” for its use. The ARES installation at the 911 Dispatch Center was completed and now is fully operational with capabilities on both 2 meters and 440 mhz. A huge thank you goes out to all the folks who worked hard to make this possible especially KD8BKT, Don Freeman and KD8KCH, Jim Bird. Our December ARES Meeting had an interesting program by Doug Denzer, KD8RGV on drones and the ability to photograph from them and their ability to beam back live video from disaster sites. ---
PICKAWAY COUNTY--- The PCoARES provided communications for the Circleville Christmas Parade at the request of the Downtown Business Association. This is the second year we were asked to do this.

Athens: EC/DEC serving on LEPC committee planning full scale drill coming up in early June. The hazmat component looks to be a nasty methyl ethyl death chemical involved in an actual recent area event ACARA is starting annual Technician license classes on Monday, January 9, 2017. VE session set for March 13..
Hocking: HVARC assisted with lineup of the Logan Christmas Parade. This is the first time we were asked to assist. Our service was greatly appreciated by the event organizers and we were asked to assist with the planning stage next year.
Lawrence: another good year Happy New Year to all DEC comments: Congrats to the Pickaway-Ross Career Technical Center at Chillicothe and instructor David Pentecost, KC8WEB as one of four recipients of an ARRL Education and Technology Station Grant DEC Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ will present on newer operating modes and technology projects for amateur radio in the classroom as a member of the Computer Science Teachers Association group of presentation at the Ohio Educational Technology Conference held at the Columbus Convention Center on February 15, 2017. As Communications Director for Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure reporting that GOBA 29 for 2017 will be held in north central Ohio with anchor city of Findlay and the Hancock County Fairgrounds. Clubs and ECs have been contacted.

Coshocton: Attended an LEPC meeting. We also had a winter Skywarn Webinar training in the EOC with 11 attending. Thanks to Ema Director McMasters for setting it up. We are holding monthly ARES meetings before the W8CCA, Coshocton County Amateur Radio Assoc meeting .

MONTGOMERY COUNTY: Not much activity this month as we wind down our year and gear up for the holidays. We had 5 voice, and 5 digital nets and 1 Officers Meeting. We now focus on completing end of the year numbers and set our news goals for 2017.

PREBLE COUNTY: Preble ARES put on standby for activation to Hamilton Co. Preble assisted Darke Co. ARES for annual Horse Parade Preble ARES members attended Bob Rhodes (SK) viewing.

SHELBY COUNTY: November 18 Sidney Winter Wonderland Parade.

District 4

Hamilton County: Major event was the Tensing trial jury deliberation supporting the Cincy EMA. Four days a active operators. Two 'emergency’ activations due to last minute decision by the Cincy EMA to activate. One for a Trump protest. Second due to Trump/Pence visit. Many admin/served agency related meeting hours. Will be adding the City of Wyoming to our list. Also in conversation with the county communications center to install a shack on-site. 

From the DEC: Several operators "crossed the river" to work on the Honor Run Half Marathon which benefits Honor Flight Tri-State. I was able to attend the Hamilton County monthly meeting and heard about the developments listed above -- a lot of operators with different backgrounds and interests were in attendance -- that's what it takes to really make things work! The DEC was directly involved in Snowmageddon in Detroit, apologies for the late report!

Stark County: Terry Russ, N8ATZ Stark County ARES completed 5 public service nets for the month of November that totaled 148 check-ins. The Massillon ARC provided safety and support communications for the annual Massillon Holiday Parade that included nineteen volunteers who staged over 100 parade units on Saturday, November 19th. This event generated 80 community service hours in what has been the longest running public service event handles entirely by the club, over 30 years and counting. Additional details of all our community events are available on our website located at www.wd8aye.net.

Knox: 11-3-2016, 2 ARES participants Knox County EOC training 11-16-2016, 3 ARES participants Knox County LEPC TX

Licking:  Licking County: November was a busy month for us. Bret KD8SCL & Weldon K8NQ as well as Stan N8BHL gave a presentation about amateur radio & ARES (Amateur Radio 101) on November 10th to our county officials and served agencies. Thanks Stan for your presentation. Thanks to John Weiber & Sean Grady from the Licking Co. EMA for their support and thanks to the folks from Marion Co. & Knox Co and Scott Yonally for attending and supporting us in Licking Co. Bret KD8SCL & Weldon K8NQ have also been invited to the State EMA Directors conference in December to give the presentation as well. Work on the EOC continues and is moving forward. Ham Radio Works! 

The following is an actual account from one of our members. Scott KE8CIK We went hunting and was sharing the day of what we love and are passionate about. It was about sunset time. Still have not heard Dave (one of my best friends) on Comms (cell phones texting only). I head out on the quad to see if I can see him in orange and or a light of some type. I see his light and I holler over did you get one. He hollered back yes. I hollered back and said that did you need me and heard nothing I got over to him and he was already their field dressing his deer Dave was going to take the deer, his pack and the gun with him and I told him why don’t we share the load. I took his pack, and his gun. He pulled out of his pack a body harness so he could pull his deer. We get back over the river and Dave tells me this is a heck of a calve workout. We load the trucks and headed for home, minutes after leaving the woods, Dave started going into these convulsion type of movement. He couldn’t talk, he didn’t look at me. He didn’t even signal me. The cell phones were dead. I had my Amateur radio on to monitor channels. Well this time all my training and everything I knew just went right out the window as they say and I only reacted to what I knew. I kept hollering at Dave to stay with me. I was calling out on the Radio for any one that could hear me as I wasn’t hitting the Newark repeater yet. One guy came back to me, I can’t remember his call sign. I told him what was going on and where I was and the direction I was heading and could he call Mary Ann Township Fire department to let them know we are on the way. As I got closer I heard the Newark repeater call out, I called out to KD8EIK, Douglas, I knew he work as a volunteer at the Mary Ann Twp. Fire Department. I gave Douglas the information that I had a non-responsive, 50-year-old male, we were coming in from hunting. I also told Douglas about the convolutions that Dave experienced on the way in. I pulled up to the Mary Ann Fire Department and they were ready for us, all because I used my skills as a Amateur radio operator. In conclusion, I can say the Dave died at the end of a day of hunting, Dave was a fun-loving guy that never met a stranger. He could put a smile on anyone’s face. I’m thankful that he didn’t drive himself that day and I was with him at the end. Good by my friend I will always carry you around with me forever. Cell phone service in this area is very spotty but texting does work most of the time. 

Marion: Marion County Ohio FSD-212 Comments November – 2016 November proved to be both an interesting and educational month for the Marion ARES crew. The ARES had been requested by EMA Director Sarah McNamee and Sheriff Tim Bailey to provide backup communications from all ten polling locations around the county back to the Board of Elections office this year. Election Day started early with the net control going into operation at 6 AM from the ARES station at the new 911/Dispatch Center located in the Marion County Administration Building. The polls were open from 6:30am till 7:30pm so it made a long day which got longer when the election board director requested we remained until the poll captains departed for the election board office with voting machine date, which added a couple of hours in several locations. To say we learned a lot about being prepared would be an understatement, but all in all, it was a positive exercise and produced great PR for the ARES. The Board of Elections Director was so impressed, he requested we participate in future elections.

Counties reporting: Athens, Hocking, Jackson, Lawrence, Vinton 

Athens: ACARA/SCARF supported the Bobcat Trail Marathon on Sunday November 6 with ten operators. Hocking: HVARC assisted with lineup of the annual Veterans Day Parade. This is always one of our favorite events and is very well attended buy the public. Once again we send our heartfelt thanks to all of our Veterans for your service and sacrifices! Lawrence: we had our Christmas dinner with 33 there we also had our Christmas Parade with 6 hams helping out. DEC comments: DEC represented Ohio ARES at the SOARA (Lawrence County) Christmas dinner on November 21.

District 10: Best wishes to all ARES volunteers and their families for a wonderful holiday season!   Ashtabula County: Goodbye November and what good weather Mother Nature had left to give us. And in comes December- roaring with temps and snow that make us wonder how long we'll be holed up with our radios, keeping warm! Bunch of restructuring going on this past month between talks at our meeting and also our Christmas dinner. Hopefully all should be hashed out by this coming month. And the time has come- with all that is happening as of late in my personal life/family, I will be stepping down as EC for Ashtabula County. I'm talking with a couple people, vetting them for the position. There are two I have in mind that have the time to do us good up here on the lake shore! I won't be stepping down until I have secured the position for the upcoming EC. He will more than likely be a current AEC. I still plan on being active with ARES- just can’t dedicate the time required to be an EC.   

Cuyahoga County: Not much going on this month in Cuyahoga County. Planning for 2017 is well underway.   

Geauga County: Things have basically wound down.   

Lake County: No comments.   

Lorain County: No Comments.  

Medina County: The Medina EOC is setting up a communications unit with some members of ARES joining in. Registration and background checks are now being done. We are just starting so no news yet on how well it works. More later

October was a fairly quiet month as we had 1 - Skywarn Net on the 30th.

Hancock County: EC Evan Hartman W8KJR Our drill this month was the SEC which was an excellent exercise this year with great participation. Looking forward to next year.

Erie County: EC Bob Heim K8HLH Remodeling the EMA radio room, starting to put it back together. Adding 1-- 2/440 radio. We did our SET This month 10/1/16 72 man hours

Wood County: EC Eric Willman WD8LEI  Updated member count from updating membership at general meeting

Wyandot County: EC Ron Wilch KE8PX  The Wyandot County Hams did not meet this month. We will be meeting at the Wyandot Memorial Hospital conference rooms on November 10. We will be discussing upcoming officer elections and the annual Christmas dinner party meeting in December.

District 3   Eight of nine counties reporting:  276 Members (includes all 9 counties), 96 Total Events (49 Voice Net Sessions, 7 Digital Net Sessions, 34 Meetings/ Drills/Tests/Training, 5 Public Service Events, 1 Emergency Operations), 952 Total Man-Hours.

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY:  Three of the four voice nets were conducted with the NCS operating remote via echolink from Central Florida.  One monthly ARES meeting.

CLARK COUNTY:  Three weekly net sessions and two ARES events for a total of 5 events and 50 man-hours.  

DARKE COUNTY:  Five weekly voice net sessions and one other ARES event for a total of 6 events and 23 man-hours.

GREENE COUNTY:  Four GCARES weekly voice nets, four GCARES weekly digital nets, four GCARES weekly Mesh Discussion nets, five Bellbrook support group voice nets and four Fairborn support group voice nets, 15 License Course sessions, 1 Bellbrook Fire Department Open House Exhibit and 7 Greene County ARES/Miami Valley Mesh Alliance projects for a total of 44 events and 224 man-hours.

LOGAN COUNTY:  Four weekly voice net sessions for a total of 4 events and 2 man-hours.

MIAMI COUNTY:  No report received this month.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY:  Three weekly voice nets, three weekly digital nets and two ARES events – one was a request to deploy operators to all Montgomery County hospitals for up to 72 hours and the other was a standby net during the “switch-over” from the county 800 radio system to MARCS -- for a total of 2 events and 121 man-hours.

PREBLE COUNTY:  Four weekly net sessions, four public service event and one other ARES events for a total of 9 events and 186 man-hours.

SHELBY COUNTY:  Five weekly net sessions, one public service event and three other ARES events for a total of 9 events and 170 man-hours. 

DISTRICT 3 ACTIVITIES:  Four District 3 ARES Weekly Net sessions for a total of 4 events and 39 man-hours.

District 4

District highlights include the Queen Bee Half Marathon, and Run Like Hell 5K. 

Hamilton County has been engaging with LEPC, and had some "prep" time for a high-profile trial. More on that in the next report.

District 5

Terry Russ, N8ATZ, of Stark County Stark County ARES completed 4 public service nets for the month of October that totaled 112 check-ins. We took part in this years SET by establishing a public service net on our ARES Repeater. The net was conducted by Assistant EC Dave Beltz, WD8AYE from our station at the county EMA office. We notified EMA Director Tim Warstler and received 12 check-ins during the exercise. We also sponsored an ARES information table during the Massillon Hamfest that included a G0-Box display and informational literature. Many visitors stopped by with questions and comments during the hamfest. Dennis Conklin, AI8P, of Summit County Dennis Conklin, AI8P, DEC5 is acting EC until a suitable replacement can be found.

Delaware: Work continues on development of a club/ARES station at the county Red Cross building with two VHF and two HF antennas in the air and tables up and cable run for three HF stations and two VHF stations.

Marion: 2016 October was a take-a-breather month for the Marion ARES gang after a busy summer chocked full of activities. The month started off with a nice weekend camp out at the Indian Lake Summer digs of Don Freeman, KD8BKT. Don prepared his famous secret recipe chili over the open campfire and a good time was had by all. The ARES has been requested to provide backup communications from all polling locations around the county back to the Board of Elections office this year. EMA Director, Sarah McNamee, discussed this with our group at the September Training Session. A demonstration of using counterpoise wire antennas for HT’s was presented by Lynn, W8MLL

Counties reporting: Athens, Hocking, Lawrence, Pike, Ross,Scioto  

Athens: ACARA and SCARF members supported the Buckeye Trail Marathon on Saturday, October 1, 2016 and the Susan B. Komen Athens Race for the Cure on Sunday, October 23, 2016. The next event will be the Bobcat Trail Marathon on Sunday, November 6, 2016. 

Hocking: Our new EComm trailer is coming along nicely. Electric circuits, cabinets & shelves installed, Lettering to be added within the next few days and it will be ready for local Veterans and Christmas parade. 

Ross: Held four technician classes and a test session in conjunction with SVARC. Special thanks to John WB8GRX. 

Scioto: Still working on new equipment and new tower site to improve county and statewide communications. 

District 9

Coshocton: KL7RF AEC, filling in for AA8BN EC 

Muskingum: : Provided a 100mw fm station and radio communications for the Muskingum County flu shot clinic held at the fairgrounds. Volunteers from Guernsey County ARES also helped.

District 10

Thank you to all ARES volunteers who have helped during 2016. It\'s definitely been a busy year! 

Ashtabula County: No comments. 

Cuyahoga County: Things are winding down for the winter in Cuyahoga County. We will have one final meeting and then get together after the New Year. 

Geauga County: Things are winding down for the year. 

Lake County: 11 Operators provide communication for the Northern Ohio Marathon on October 2nd. A group of 6 operators activated the Jams A Garfield home for the 9th time during the NPOTA event this year. 

Lorain County: No Comments. 

Medina County: SET fell on the same day as Home Depot Safety Day where we had K8FH\\\'s comm trailer so the trailer, Medina EOC and Medina Hospital took part with nine operators manning the three locations. Public interest was better than in past years at the trailer. We gave handouts to the public as well as tours of the operating trailer.

Provided assistance to local county Fair board for 5 days of the fair

District 3

CLARK COUNTY:  Three weekly net sessions and two ARES events for a total of 5 events and 33 man-hours. 

DARKE COUNTY:  Four weekly voice net sessions, two Public Service Events and one other ARES event for a total of 7 events and 91 man-hours.

GREENE COUNTY:  Four  GCARES weekly voice nets, four GCARES weekly digital nets, four GCARES weekly Mesh HSMM discussion nets, four Bellbrook support group voice nets and four Fairborn support group voice nets, one Public Service Event (61 hams supporting USAF Marathon at Wright Patterson Air Force Base), Greene County ARES/Miami Valley Mesh Alliance continuing planning and preparing for expansion of Mesh Network across Greene and Montgomery counties and scoping out Greene County Fairground in preparation of Mesh presence for nex year’s Dayton Hamvention® -- for a total of 23 events and 707 man-hours.

MIAMI COUNTY:  Nine weekly voice net sessions, four weekly digital net sessions, three public service events and twelve other ARES/RACES events including (1) Operation Fire Station: All 24 Miami County Fire Station were manned by amateur radio operators, (2) Tipp City Full Scale Exercise, (3) a WACO Fly-in Special Event Station operating voice and digital modes on 40m, 20m and 2m, (4) a Technician Class License Course September 1^st through end on November, (5) Reception Center Check-in Drill, and seven other ARES/RACES event for a total of 28 events and 256 man-hours.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY:  Four weekly voice nets, four weekly digital nets and one ARES event (Training presented by Ohio Department of Health on operation of ODH-MARCS radios in hospital command centers) for a total of 9 events and 35 man-hours.  MoCoARES members also supported City of Kettering annual Labor Day “Holiday AT Home Parade” and USAF Marathon.

PREBLE COUNTY:  Four weekly net sessions, one public service event (annual ‘world famous’ Preble County Pork Festival) and two other ARES events for a total of 7 events and 90 man-hours.

SHELBY COUNTY:  Four weekly net sessions, one public service event (Sidney YMCA 5K Run) and four other ARES events (OSPOTA, Ohio ARES Conference, September ARES meeting and Fox Hunt Training) for a total of 9 events and 266 man-hours.

District 4

Butler: No comment

Hamilton: Activation for Cincy EMA backup radio testing due to new 800 MHz system installed. Bike Ride PS event. Members participated in several outside nets adding 12 hours to the numbers above. Outreach at local hamfest. Three attended ARES Summit in the Columbus area.

District 5

Gary Amato, KB8HTU, Columbiana County Provided communications for a local festival where we practiced using commercial radio equipment from Emergency Management. Provided communication and interoperability at another street fair also monitoring weather for fair officials.T erry Russ, N8ATZ, Stark County Stark Co ARES completed 4 public service nets for the month of September that totaled 116 check-ins. There were no public service events during the month but County EC Terry Russ, N8ATZ and Assistant EC Don Wade, W8DEA attended the fall Ohio ARES Conference where Don gave a presentation on having a family emergency plan.

District 6

Richland County ARES had 1 Training Session and 1 Skywarn Net Richland County ARES Installed a DMR Radio in Richland County EMA. Richland County ARES Holds OHIO DMR Net 1st.and 3rd Wednesday of each month on the OHIO Talkgroup.

District 7

DELAWARE: September passed quickly with just a couple of events and building a new club/ARES station in the local Red Cross building. HF/VHF/UHF gear is getting set up, a new 160 meter loop is in the air and antenna planning is underway. FRANKLIN: We are gearing up for the Nationwide Children\\\'s Hospital Columbus Marathon on October 16th. We can always find a place for someone that would like to participate.

LICKING: Licking County had a slow September! We were asked by Sean Grady, EMA Director to help with communications for the annual Licking Co. River Round Up at the Black Hand Gorge Nature Preserve. Sean’s main goal was to test amateur radio communications in the park due to the location and the high rock faces along the river. The test was a huge success and Sean was pleased how well ARES was able to communicate in the area. Many thanks to Marion Co. for hosting the ARES Conference, it was great. The remodel work on the ARES radio room at the EOC is starting to move forward and we excited to see it get started. Many thanks to Sean & John for their support of ARES and those members who have spent many hours on the planning of the radio room remodel.

MARION: September was a busy time for the Marion ARES gang. The annual Marion Popcorn Festival started things off with a parade lasting two hours which involved the ARES providing communication along the route. The ARES also provided overnight security during the three days of the festival at downtown locations where vendors and rides were located. AEC, Don Freeman, KD8BKT, headed up the security detail from an Emcom trailer located downtown and scheduled the members for the 9pm to 9am shifts. Jim Bird, KD8KCH, headed up a team that installed new antennas atop the county administration building and ran several hundred feet of coax to the ARES station located in the new 911 Dispatch Center/EOC. The Statewide ARES Conference was at the Marion Tech/OSU campus. The Marion crew was involved in all phases from the initial planning, manning the talk in radio, parking lot direction, to even making the coffee the morning of the conference. All went well and it was fun meeting so many ARES members from around the state.

Athens: ACARA members activated Ohio State Parks on the Air at Stroud's Run SP in Athens and Lake Logan SP in Oak Hill using portable antennas and emergency power. Upcoming public service events are the Buckeye Trail Marathon on Saturday October 1, 2016 and Komen Athens Race for the Cure on Sunday October 23, 2016.

District 9

Coshocton: This month, an lepc meeting attended, monthly ARES meeting, a lot of preparation for October 1 SET. Some of our served agencies, sheriff, hospital, EMA were prepared with set books, which included messages to be sent. 213 and radiogram, digital practice. Checking our fldigi stations were ready to go was off importance at agencies and at home stations. An OTS station and backup OTS was ready to go as well. Aa8BN, Coshocton County EC

District 10

Ashtabula County: the past month was a good one and a bad one. Good because we had several events to participate in. Bad because we found out that we had several weaknesses that need to be addressed. We sat back in confidence and figured that we would be prepared. Wrong. First off we found that our calling tree needs to be updated. We have had several people move or pass on in the past year and they were keystones of the calling tree. Without them things can come to a halt. Organization of equipment. Twice we were surprised that we couldn't find gear that was supposed to be put back where it belonged and has now come up missing. Several other small problems add to the mix. And since the set drill I have been conferring with Donnie, KD8OSZ, and though it pains us- we HAVE to bring in another AEC to take Bob's position. Because of our schedules we have been caught flat footed. So... I can proudly say that Matthew Pitts has stepped up to fill this void as not only our resident digital guru but, now, also my new AEC. I will be sending out emails with new contact information for myself, Donnie, and Matt.

Cuyahoga County: ARES Members assisted with activating the National Weather Service office in Cleveland during widespread severe storms. Public service event season has come to a close and we are now looking ahead to 2017.

Geauga County: This was a big month for Geauga County ARES. Our big public service event for the year - the 194th Great Geauga County Fair - took place September 1 through 5. This requires an incredible amount of man hours. This year we had more than ever - that's 1350 man hours! At the fair, we work with the Sheriff's Office, the Firefighters Association and the Fair Board to drive golf carts and help people get to and from their vehicles, as well as to provide eyes and ears on the fairgrounds to help look for missing children and parents, and to perform other miscellaneous tasks as instructed by the Sheriff's Office. Additionally, the Geauga Amateur Radio Association ran a special event station to promote the fair and amateur radio. We also participated in the biennial Perry Nuclear Power Plant drill sponsored by FirstEnergy and the Geauga County Department of Emergency Services. This year’s drill involved problems with the reactor that ended up requiring evacuations. We staffed the Emergency Operations Center and sent hams to man the pre-planned emergency shelters. We made contact with Ashtabula and Lorain counties on both HF and 2 meters, and the state EOC W8SGT on HF. This drill was evaluated by FEMA, and the ham operators staffing the EOC were interviewed by a FEMA evaluator who herself is a ham! The whole exercise received a glowing review from FEMA, showing that our area is well-prepared to handle a problem at the plant.

Lake County: The big event this month was the Perry Nuclear Power Plant drill with the E.O.C.and all the County Agencies. This was our SET operation for this year. We demonstrated our Comm. trailer at the Willoughby Hills F D Touch a Truck Event. September was our 8th NPOTA activation at the James A. Garfield Home. Then there was the ARES Conference in Marion. September was a very active month
